Hey guys - long time lurker, first time poster.
I recently acquired a 90's Trek 8000 MTB frame for $25 that I'm turning into a cheap-as-possible SS commuter to spare my nice bike from the overflowing bike racks now that fall semester is back at my college.
I've got a rigid fork lying around that is about 400mm A2C with a really long uncut steerer. I was thinking about adding alloy headset/stem spacers at the top of the crown before the crown race to make it more like 440mm to correct for the 80mm fork that originally came on the bike. This would also let me fine tune down to increments of 3mm or so if I really wanted to.
Anyone ever tried this? Will it work/not fit/break the headtube/break the steerer off of the fork/screw with geometry?
I know I could get a good rigid fork at a decent price, but I'm trying to get this together in the next few days and no one seems to have any decent rigids locally. Thanks!
