. . . for this application: I can only get to my local trails every couple of weeks. So, I have a route in my city I ride that consists of back alleys of dirt with some mixed stone on the tops in places and short regular paved roads in between connecting them. The dirt alleys are twisty at times and have 90 degree turns connecting them. There are some drops that I can throw in as well. So I guess I need a tire that will hook up in the dirt with some loose stuff on top and also not wear as fast as some of the others on the pavement.
I've been looking at the Conti Gravity 2.3's. Any ideas? Thanks.

The standard Conti Gravity 2.3's don't have a really tough carcass. I found they seemed to attract flats. For a lot of road use the Protection version would be a good investment. I also found them very slow rolling compared to the Vertical Pro's and they didn't track as well on hardpack or pavement, although they were quieter than Nokian NBX tires. The Gravitys I have only measure about 2.15" wide, same as the Vertical Pro's.

Killer Bees. I've never used em, but I know someone that swears by them for just the situation you mentioned.

Couldn't remember so I didn't add it. Turns out, I wouldn't be able to remember anyway. Vredestein.
http://www.gords.com/bikes_articles_5tires.html scroll down to killer bee review. Happens to be my mtb club.
They look like they'd slide all over the place on dirt, but they're like a chamelon's foot, tons of tiny little things to grip things. Work good (except in deep mud).

Thanks. I'll look into those Killer Bees and perhaps steer away (no punn intended) from those Conti Gravity's.
Makes me wonder if something like the Maxxis Holly Roller or Kenda K-Rads might work.
