View Full Version : Disc Caliper/Rotor Alignment

The bolts for my disc caliper are not long enough to allow the caliper to be moved inward to the point of centering over the rotor. So I have a few options and I need advice on which is the best.

Should I cut the locking washers off the bolts so they can thread farther into the caliper?
Should I move rotor outward by relocating the washers under the rotor bolts to the inside, between the rotor and the hub?

Are those safe options?

Or should I just get longer bolts and more spacers?

squirrl_poker,

What brand are you running for a brake and rotor? Are you saying that your caliper won't move more toward the center of the bike? If so, as long as you're running bolt on rotors, you can shim them out a bit.

You understood my question correctly. I am using Gatorbrake 4 Piston brakes and rotors. I shimmed the disc out a little and cut the locking washers off the caliper bolts (is this a problem?). Now the caliper is centered with the supplied spacers. The bolts thread about halfway into the caliper body; is that enough? Seems to me it must be because they supplied the thick spaces I'm using.

squirrl_poker,

I went to Gatorbrake's website and looked at their manuals to see where the issue lies. By the instructions, it looks like you could shim the caliper body inward. I believe there was a good article in Dirt Rag a few issues back about how shim and set up disc brakes. It sounds as though you have it, but you might want to check it out. Good luck!
