just wondering but is it better to have a larger tire on the back and smaller tire up front (example front 2.1 rear 2.3) or is it better to have a larger tire up front and a small tire in the rear (example front 2.7 rear 2.5) or just same tire size on both front and rear ?

wider in front, definitely. I once (accidently) put my fatter tire on the back, and the bike felt weird. The skinnier rear tire responds better to pedal strokes, and the fatter front will help take the edge of the trail, helping out your hands and forearms.

...and generally the front tire needs more grip for cornering than the rear needs for acceleration so bigger is better. Although some big tires roll pretty slow, it's usually less of a problem when it's not the driven wheel.

You also tend to have more of your weight on the rear tire, so having less rolling resistance on the rear is nice...
