After a month of looking I have narrowed my first serious MTB choice down to three bikes (all hardtail with hydraulic disc setup and all avaiable at the same price). The bike will be used for all aspects of Mountain Biking.
My choices are:
Scott Elite Racing
Specialized Rockhopper Disc
Trek 4900 Disc
Any thoughts or advice or experiences or comparisons would be greatly appreciated......Cheers.

Hopefully you can ride them all and buy the bike that "Feels" the best.
If that's not possible, but from the local bike shop that "Feels" the best.
You need to ride them. Components can be changed and brand names matter even less, but if the bike doesn't fit you won't enjoy riding it. Buy the one that feels great, if they all do, buy the shiniest one.

I have a 4900, and my only regret is that i didnt get it with discs. With discs, its the perfect mid level bike.

so yer after discs, ay? Have you checked out the Giant Igauna disc? 550 isn't bad for a disc setup. The Rainer comes at a bit hefter 800 but has those avids.
Otherwise, I've noticed you don't have a single steel bike. Or a steel single bike either.
I'd avoid the trek mostly because the hype gets you a higher price. Thanks, Lance. There are plenty of good disc setups now thanks to cable pulls, but make sure to give them all a try
