SRAM doesn't recommend using their powerlink with Shimano chains. The thought is that there are differences with pickup points and whatnot that compromise performance.

Wipperman makes masterlinks for virtually any application though. I used their 10-speed Campagnolo masterlink with no problems FWIW.

THE BEST solution for Shimano chains are Shimano's own chain pins. They are meant to be used anytime a chain has been cut or broken. They come in specific sizes (8sp, 9sp, 10sp) and I'm sure they are pretty cheap at your LBS. They are a bit longer than a regular pin and have a tapered "guide" end that breaks away with pliers once the main pin is pushed into place. New chains usually come with an extra pin or two.

Here's what they look like in a bag of 50. :)

Check your chain breaker for a hole in the body somewhere. After driving the Shimano chain pin through, you insert the stub into the hole and use the tool to snap off the stub.

Beats carrying a pair of pliers to go with extra pins.
