...first of all,i forgot to take my digicam (ugh!),so this is an "after we got home pic".he successfully completed the safety training course w/out incident (obviously, not dressed like this-i won't let him ride w/out his safety gear, these were just for the pics) and got the t-shirt,then he won a race against 11 other 4-6 year olds (he's 5),includin several bigger kids (he's small for his age) w/out trainin wheels, and got this ribbon....dang,that makes a dad proud!!!:D

ps:i think he's ready to both lose the extra wheels, and move up to a 16-20" bike...whadda y'all think?

The kids races at Velirium (http://www.velirium.com/competitions-3/shimano-veli-kidz-race/photo-album) in Mont Sainte Anne were a hoot to watch. Some kids were just bewildered or traumatized by the whole process and some kids just took to it like a duck to water and rode their butts off, some with training wheels on the bikes. Shimano sponsors the races and every kid gets a medal and a prize pack.

longhaultruker2,

Awesome job to your son! That is a great thing and he look like he is as proud as punch too! Keep nuturing that desire to ride!

I have taken my son on many off road trail-a-bike rides and he is totally digging it. I totally love having a "built in" riding partner. I am going to make the most of it before he turns "I am too cool to hang out with my old man" age.

So totally cool LT2. BMAC, you are still showing the love by taking charge. I am in the reverse here as I am trying to get my dad to start riding. He is seventy and finally retired. I am hoping to get him out and about. He loves his career, and I don't slight him for that. But, there is still more too life. I gave him my old stumpjumper a couple of years ago and it has just hung in his garage. I have made modifications for a more upright ride. So, I have scheduled time to just take him on easy gravel trail rides. He is gung ho to ride now. It probably helps that I now live 7 miles away instead of several hundred.

Thanks for sharing the picks. I love seeing kids excited about being on bikes and hanging with their parents. I was an odd kid and never really hated hanging with my parents.

my daughter (jamie) isn't showin as much interest as nicholas, mostly because of (video) games,so i don't push her to ride, but encourage her every time i take nicholas to the track (can't WAIT till he sheds his trainin wheels, the we can ride fireroads across from the house).

jamie's just about outgrown her pink trek 16"er,and while at the lbs sat,we checked out some possibles for next spring, and she may grow enough to give 24" a try...she says she doesn't want another bmx style bike, wants one w/ gears and possibly squishy forx so she can ride more w/ me-cool!

as for nicholas,he has a hand-me-down 12"er free spirit from sears that wuz j's 1st ride, but gunna be movin him up (at his request) to a 16"er spring, and i doubt he's gunna want his sister's pink bike,so i got a frew books on '08 model from lbs's w/ a 100 mile radius,so far he likes the little diamondbacks that have the fenders like a motocrosser...

sorry:odidn't mean to ramble...i just love thinkin bout my kidz bein into bikes:D:D:D!now,if i could just get my wife on one...she's never ridden (as in,ever:(),and is curious, but is showin interest in a 3 wheeler (i can't convince her it's safe to try 2 wheelers w/ out trainin wheels:rolleyes:).i'd like to get her one for christmas (that'd REALLY shock her,she normally gets $,clothes,or jewelry.

.

Fudge,

We will be celebrating my dads 75th bday tomorrow. You two would get along famously. First of all he can still crank out 20 miles (mostly flat stuff around the North Side of Pittsburgh) without even trying and many times he will tell me did 25 or more. He rides a Trek 4000 (I think that is the model number) with slick tires that I put on for him a few years back. He has also manages a few crashes here and there and occasionally shows up at family functions with some new scars and road rash. I keep telling him the railroad tracks need to be hit at a perfect 90 degree angle whenever possible.

Secondly he may be more liberal than Denis Kucinich. We have a standing agreement to never, ever discuss politics.

He bought his first mountain bike back in 1987 (A schwinn) just around the same time I bought my first good road bike (Panasonic). I remember the conversation went something like:

Dad "Have you thought about getting a mountain bike?"
Me "Where are you gonna ride that thing?"
Dad "Well you can ride it anywhere. Thats the point of a mountain bike."
Me "Nah. I'll get more use out of a road bike."

I never was as smart as him.;)

I'm currently getting my 3 kids into biking but considering the hilly terrain around these parts it can sometimes be a challenge.

Good luck!

he's ready for a little bigger bike for sure.

Think he'll be a single speeder?
