Thinking about some rival or force cranks in my race 1x9 setup. What do you guys think? I'll keep using a jump stop with a salsa crossing guard with a 36t. I'm guessing they'll be pretty stiff, cuz im running some stylos now. Any of you guys used road cranks off-road before?

probably wont work. I have tried to use 105 cranks (because it was all i had) off road. the spacin is all wrong. the smaller ring on the road cranks is lacated where the small ring is on the mtb crank. MTB chainstays flair out to accomodate wider tires. SO you would be tring to fit a 36t ring where a 22t is designed to fit. the ring will hit the statys. I solved the problem by getting a BB with long enough spindle to clear the stays but With Rival there is no longer spindle.
the distingush between mountian cranks and a road crank for a reason.

i was thinking that, but was hoping otherwise. however i could run them on my SS by switching the small ring to the outside where the big ring normally is..........right? am i missing something? of course no more guard, but i don' run a guard on that bike anyway.

of course you could always use BB spacers to get the clearance and the chain line you need.
use the middle ring, put a "gaurd" where the outer ring would be....

I got a set of road cranks to fit my Mia by yoinking the little ring. Lucky maybe.
