Eventually i would like to put disc brakes on my bike. I have a 06 hardrock. i've upgraded the fork to a Recon 351 and love it. I figure my next upgrade will be a wheelset. What do you guys reccommend. I am on a budget and have been looking at some of Mavic's entry level stuff. Could i get away with just a new hub and leaving the stock specialized rims just for now?(which seem pretty solid).
Anyways, just some ideas would be nice.
I ride mostly XC, fast singletrack, but always look for a good drop.
Thanks guys

When you say that you are on a budget, how much are you looking to spend?
If you have $250.00 to blow, Greenfish has a disc wheelset w/Magura hubs and Mavic XM317 rims on sale. The normally sell them for $350.00.
I have one of these wheels on the front of one of my singlespeeds. Magura hubs are actually made by DT Swiss. They also use DT Competition dbl butted spokes.
Nice stuff!

Ok, this is really weird. I just got an e-mail that included this reply:
I guess i don't have a set price range. If i had to make one it would be 300 or under. I just want something solid, i don't need anything top of the line. if i can't find a good cheap wheelset i simply won't get one, this is something i want not something i need to be able to get out and ride.
I have built a set at universal cycles. Its a little over what i want to spend but seems like a good wheel set. Anyone use anything similar to this? What would you change? are there equvilent parts for chaper?

But, it's not here on the thread????WTF?
Anyway, if you want something really cheap and of reasonable quality, check out Bikes-r-us (aka Performance). They have a set of Sun Rhyno Lites laced to Shimano Deore hubs for $109.99. Can't beat that with a stick. Here's the link: http://www.performancebike.com/shop/profile.cfm?SKU=21654&subcategory_ID=5310
Btw, that link took me to an empty shopping cart.

I removed that because i noticed the link wouldn't work. You need a password to enter the shopping cart so it can't work. Anyways they were shimano DT disc hubs 32 holes matched with mavic XT717 disc or linear wheels. They come fully assembled for $320. That is more than i want to spend but seems it would be a good wheel. How does the wheel you mentioned compare in quality.
I'm just trying to get an idea of what money can buy in the way of wheels. What do you get if you spend a lot and what do you miss out on if you go cheap
Thanks

The Rhyno Lite/Deore wheelset is a hell of a good value--strong and cheap w/serviceable bearings. I'm not sure about the weight if that's a concern. They are probably heavier than the Mavic/Magura wheels.
If you're strapped for cash, I'd go with the Rhyno's. You can get two sets of those for the price of the Mavic's with beer money to spare.

I was in a similar situation. I have a Marin Hawk Hill hardtail and I recently upgraded my wheels. I got the Mavic Crossride disc. LOVE EM. Not super light or anything, but so far I havn't even thought twice about. The roll real nice, super sturdy, and no sign of being out of true. They were only like $300 (including 2 new tires and tubes as well). I but Maxxis Highroller 2.35"s on there as well and I love them.

which hardrock is it off of? if its the hardrock sport, and not the XC, then its got double wall rims and they last forever,i know cuz i bought one just to beat up, those hoops took some 10 ft drops and 25ft gaps.
so if you just get some good sealed hubs and a buddy to lace em up to your rims for a six pack, your set. BTW i live about an hour and a half from you.:D

If your buying rims now and disc brakes later, you'll need to buy wheels that will do both rim and disc brakes. The Sun Rhyno wheels mentioned before are good for that. I have a set on one of my bikes. Good solid wheels with XT hubs.
Dirk, check your PMs
I had to shorten my message to fit the forum character limit, so here is what I trimed.
Feel free to tell Scott (and do ask for Scott by name) I (Randy) suggested you come in to talk to him. He is off on Sundays and Mondays.
If you can only afford one upgrade at a time be SURE your choice will work with both rim and disc brakes!
