What are the "Best Cycling Movies Ever"??

Just to throw one out there, a couple of years back I watched the craziest french cartoon called "Les Triplettes de Belleville". It has almost no dialouge, and is about a Tour de France rider that is captured for insidious purposes. A must see!

Lack of sleep here, so I can't remember the title -- or even the time period beyond mid 90s I think, but it was coverage of the Paris-Roubaix classic.

A Russian rider won the race in damned vile conditions. It was also notable because he was using a Rock Shox road fork -- not that I think it really did him much good :p But whatever he was riding, it was amazing to watch he and all the other riders perform at that level under such conditions.

Much as I'm an off road rider at heart, I'll always turn to road classics and tours if I want to watch cycling on the tube. I get bored really quick watching the crop of "huckfest" videos out there

"The Flying Scotsman" is a new movie, it's good.

"Breaking Away"

Fox has a movie out called "Chainsmoke", it's a cool movie. It was filmed during the Terrafirma era, mid to late nineties. I have my copy and it's cool to view every now and then.

RAD! I can't believe no one's mentioned it already!!! C'mon, Cru is RAD!

As far as "huckfest" videos go, I like 'em. Those guys can handle a bike! The Red Bull Retrospective is cool. It is rather neat watching the progression from year to year. Although, some videos do get quite boring at times...

I'm suprised davkatreb hasn't mentioned Quicksilver... Its got fixies in it afterall... 6 degrees of Kevin Bacon ;)

I saw this flick just as all of the hype was being foisted at us and I felt a bit let down. I was all prepared for what it is about and the mood and tone but I found it less than satisfying. Maybe I'll have to try it again as I just didnt appreciate it first time around.

Breaking Away rocks as does Pee Wee. I also saw the IMAX movie about the Tour this past summer and I enjoyed it big time.

Pee Wee's Big Adventure is actually based on (or is a spoof of) a film called The Bicycle Thief (1948, Italy), a very highly rated foreign film. To Triangulate, you'll need to see Rockers (1978, Jamaica), which features a motorscooter in the same role as the stolen bicycle

As for that flick Rad, it looks like you have to pay $60 and up for a vhs copy online, I may not get to see that one for a while.

On Any Sunday...not really bicycles but it inspired me more than any other movie. I remember I rode my Stingray down to my dad's drugstore and left it there for safe keeping, then walked to the downtown movie theater. Afterwards I wanted to ride just like Malcolm Smith and Steve McQueen. Very cool movie.

Watched a really good BMX movie the other day at steel-s-real's house in Caracas. Joe Kid on a Stingray. It was really good.

the previously mentioned paris roubaix isn't a movie, so it cant count. it's the 1994 world cycling productions video of that race, not a movie. by the way, it was andrei tchmil that won that race. what was cooler than him riding with a rock shox, as was about 80% of the race was johan museeuw's bike. he got so close to catching tchmil during his breakaway, but his bike broke at the pivot. yes, the pivot. he was riding a prototype bianchi dual suspension road bike. he wound up 5th overall, after a bike change, which took ages for his support to get to him on the muddy cobbles.

now for the best cycling movie, has to be a sunday in hell, the film shot around the 1976 paris roubaix, or le course en tete, which is all in french, without subtitles and is a documentary about eddy merckx. lots of great footage of eddy. the clips of the 1970 ghent wvegelgem in the blizzard, with 4 inches of snow on the road and inches of snow on the riders backs and shoulders, is a reminder of how hard road riding can be.

Indeed it was not a movie; but then about half the stuff mentioned in the thread aren't movies, either. And -- and this is my opinion only -- not being a huge movie buff, I can't say there are any "cycling" movies I've seen that I would watch a second time anyway. One last thing I'd like to mention is that I didn't say Tchmil's use of a Rock Shox was cool ... just notable.

I pretty much can agree with your take on A Sunday in Hell; except for the fact that it was in French without subtitles. My French is nonexistent and will most likely remain so; still I think you and I would agree that the visuals of the video footage I mentioned, and the Merckx movie are damned fine viewing :)

ROCKERS! It's Dangerous! This one is a classic, well worth seeing. Complete with subtitles to decipher the Jamaican patois!

Also, hard to believe RAD is not on dvd, and so expensive as a vhs. :( bummer, man!
