Since MoOse won't let us hear his Fenders,I thought I'd post a few girls playing some really good guitar. The first is electric. It's a young Korean woman phunkin out a bit. Very very nice work.
The second is the one that truly blows me away. It's a classical tremelo piece that I aspire to play called 'Recuerdos De La Alhambra' I would rather hear this woman than Segovia on this piece. Her tremolo is to die for. The background noise mostly dissipates after the first few minutes:

I'm always amazed how people make it look so effortless when I've gotta work so hard to make my mistake riddled noise happen.

No kidding. The girl w/ the electric is smooth as hell. I'll never have those electric chops.
On classical, there are 15 y/o kids playing pieces that would take me 6 monthes to learn.

I had a friend that gave me tabs for Bach's Bourree when we were both 15. He could play it flawlessly then. I still have trouble with some of it and I am 31 now.

As soon as I read this I fired up the digicam. Best I could do w/ record on is choke a handful of times but wtf? Here's my fresh version of the Bouree' in E minor. Happy Holidays.

That's actually a low intermediate piece IMO.
I think it might have taken a couple monthes
way back. I can play it w/o mistakes.
The pieces the 15 y/o kid was playing were closer to what the asian woman was doing w/ the tremelo technique on classical.
At one point,I quit guitar because I would never be John McLaughlin or whoever that asian woman is. When my daughter was seven[1997],she started violin in school so I picked it up and learned 'Mood For a Day' by Steve Howe of Yes. I wanted her to see somene practicing.
Since then,I've been trying maintain my playing in spite of a lack of real ability. I'm not afraid to suck. I don't care if ignoramouses or rednecks call me Meatloaf.;) Meatloaf has a lot more talent than I do. It's flattering actually.
Here's Mood for a Day:

did you learn any formal music theory? If so, does it help?

Totally.I learned that stuff by reading the notes. And it does help. Especially w/ my lack of natural ability.
If you want to play involved fingerstyle or classical guitar,at least a handful of lessons are in order. Guitar can be a very cool solo instrament and imo there are many classical pieces that don't suck. You can also read stuff in other genres. I have a killer arrangement of 'Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out' arranged by the same guy who arranged the Celtic harp pieces.
Here's a book that I owe a lot to. This plus a decent teacher and you'll be on your way.
I got my copy before I owned a cd player:eek: It's fun to play classical guitar as background while people are sitting aroound drinking wine or beer in the summer.
