Okay, favorite topic among mtn bikers.
I live in Venezuela where the beer is cheap and cold, but all pilzners (am I spelling that right?), and very limited in variety. You got 3 majors; Polar, Regional, and Brahma. Of the three I usually drink Polar, Solera which is like drinking Michelob here in the USA. It is only slightly better than Bud.
Anyway I am in the USA for a few days. Still getting reacclimated to the culture.
Here is the beer I've had so far.
1> Scottish Ale from Kelly's Brew Pub, Albuquerque, NM... Dark, somewhat hoppy, It was okay. I'd give 3 points out of 5.
2> Sam Adams Light...horrible! I drank half a bottle and poured the rest down the sink. 1/2 a point out of 5. A real disappointment since I really like blue (the original) Sammys.
3> Dale's Pale Ale. I am on my second can! This is a beer out of Lyons, Colorado. I like it! Hoppy, bitter, very tasty. I like canned beers and this is the first microbrew I've had out of a can. I give it 5 points out of 5 on my MM taste scale.

Second that!
I like New Belgium 1554. Dark, smoky and a slightly bitter after taste with a bit of a coffee like aroma. Maybe my favorite beer in the world.

Went out to eat tonight then a nightcap. We found ourselves at The Launchpad in downtown Albuquerque. Paid a $3.00 cover to get in, and got a pint of the beer mentioned above.
We suspected it to be watered down because it wasn't very good. Steiner is going to buy a six tomorrow so we can retest it.
Anyway, disappointing...but at least heard a decent country rock band while we were there, talked some Venezuelan politics to the bouncer (saw my Ven I.D. at the door) and the bartender let me get another beer at no charge...a Heffenweisen (it was on special). Even though I consider that a summer brew, it was better than the Honey Brown.

I agree about Honey Brown -- but as far as mass-produced beers go, it's not the most watered down there is. For mass-production companies, I personally think Sam is the best. Sam runs the gamut -- if you don't like Sammy Light, try Cream Stout, Black Lager, Winterfest or any of the more flavorful beers. The Cream Stout is outstanding. And if you like that one, try Bell's Kalamazoo Stout. Again, heavy and flavorful. Good stuff. Outside of stouts, really good domestic winters include River Horse Belgian Frostbite Ale. Almost a perfect heavier beer (and by heavier, I mean something brewed for taste first with a somewhat higher alcohol content -- not something you'd want to drink a dozen of in one night.) All of these, by the way are best sampled from a tap if possible. (Frostbite might be tough out there -- it's brewed in a small town here in the east.) And if you don't care about staying domestic, anything that comes out of a Belgian monastery is at least worth a try -- e.g., Chimay, Corsendonk, etc. If you like sweeter beers, try a wheat -- Allagash Reserve is a great example of a domestic wheat.
For the record I have about 200 bottles from all over the world on display in my living room (everyone of personally drained.) So you can take that as evidence that I'm a dedicated collecter of hangovers. :D

I don't really care for brown ales. Never did get a taste for New Castle, and Dundee's tastes a bit too caramel-ish IMO... I like Pale Ales... and especially IPAs...
Sierra Nevada is great too. Their Celebration Ale is hoppy, bitter, tasty... and 6.8%... Its another new fav.

We had a beer thread in the old extra curricular section and at that time my favorite beer was 1554 just as it is today. I drink a wide variety of beer and appreciate them all (excepting most canned/bottled big domestics) but no matter 1554 always comes back to mind. I do like some oatmeal stouts almost as much. Bobs 47 put out by Blvd Brewing is 1554's antithesis and I like it alot.
I drink alot of Blvd partly because it is local and also because it is consitantly good (not great but always quality and good).

Vlad,
I remember there was a beer thread before, and was surprised that no one had started one yet.
My point is right now is I am retasting a lot of beers I have not tasted in a while. It has been interesting.
I agree with Jay on IPA. I keep migrating back to them. I like that hoppy bitterness. It is a refreshing flavor, compared to the somewhat flat tasting pilzners I drink in Venezuela.
I also agree with Marticus on Sammy's varieties. My favorite of his is still the original Boston Lager. I've tried other "sabors", but still like the blue label the best.

Mims thats surprising you had a bad experience with Sam Adams Light. I've only had it a few times b ut I thought it was great. Then again I noticed Midas on this thread posting something about Anchor Steam which I dont care for at all.
Different tastes for different folks.
When I buy a case I usually try and buy a light beer. Right now I have some Molson Canadian Light in there and I must say it is very good.
I'm a huge fan of Newcastle as well as Guinness.
I was on the Honey Brown kick for a bit a few years back but I got away from it.
See if you can get your hands on some Yuengling. Its a PA beer and it is very good. I believe it is the oldest brewery in the country.

I don't think any light beer could possibly be called great. Drinkable yes, great no, but that's just my .02. Yuengling is good from a keg, but nowhere near as good out of a bottle these days IMO.
Sam Adams light, yuck. The Sam Adams Winter Fest is good, as is their Summer Brew. I never used to like their lager but had some on draft the other night and it was better than okay.

Lemon in wheats and limes in Dos Equis dark seem to go well together.

Jay I'm not even going to argue here because I probably agree with you. If I had my druthers I would most every time choose a deep, hearty non light beer. I do tend to prefer the darker beers compared to the bitter ones. Sam Adams Triple Bock was one of my favorites.
That being said, when I am entertaining or have a few guys over to shoot hoops in the driveway I would always pick something lighter to drink. I guess considering I quite often get Mick Ultra shoved into my hand when I go to friends houses I consider a Sam Light or a Molson Light a rare delicacy. It makes a good chaser for the shots of Tullamore Dew I like to throw back.:D

Effing A on the Dogfishhead 120 min IPA. The six pack shop down the hill from me gets it every once in a blue moon, and since John knows I love that stuff, he usually hides a few for me. At $8-9.00 per bottle, it's a rare treat but worth it. Nearly everything Dogfishhead puts out is great. Shiner Bock from my old homeland is tough to find up here, but when fresh it's great. Anyone have a complete series of the Vertical Epics from Stone? Great, now I'm thirsty and still at work.

My only disappointment with DFH is that I get too drunk to be able to taste all their beers while on location. After throwing down a Midas Touch, a 90min (or 120min if you show up there at the right time.), then a Raison D Extra, you really need to start thinking about handing the keys over. I guess that is a good gripe to have though.:)
I can't wait to visit the Gathiersburg, MD location again.

If you're in the Irwin that's close to Greensburg, you're not too far to visit next time they have some on hand-I could have them hold you a couple if you want. May be a while but it's always worth the wait in my opinion. They must have close to 200 different brands in the cooler there, so when I can't get that, something always catches my eye (and beer appetite)//dlr

Damn skippy it's good. You might also check out Old Chub, their dark beer. Smoooth.
And if you can find it, Gordon's beer. The stuff is right spendy, maybe $15 for a four pack, but after a couple sips you'll probably wonder why they don't charge more. The stuff is over the top; one of the most extravagant beers I've ever had.

Mmmmmm... Dogfish 120:D. I've had the pleasure of tasting that a couple times, most recently a couple weeks ago while visiting my in-laws near Bal'more. I live in CO, only one store near me carries Dogfish Head but no 120 this far west. Their 90 minute IPA has been my favorite beer in the land for about the past year. The 120 is a nice treat but too strong for general purposes (like 18% ain't it?).
I visited their brewery in Milton, DE last summer. Got a brief tour followed by tastings. Good stuff!

Tonight's beer was Shiner Bock, that little ol' beer from Texas.
I was at a Country-Western bar listening to honky tonk music and the Shiner beer fit right in. Besides, that was the best they had from their choices of Bud, Bud Light, Miller, Miller Lite, Coors, Coors Light...
Shiner is one of my favorites here out West. Its the perfect beer for certain situations...Also, I just have good memories of the stuff, drinking it in the Big Bend country of Texas.
I give it a 3.5 out of 5 on the MM taste scale. Doesn't necessarily knock your socks off, but is pretty good...especially when listening to the bending twang of a pedal steel guitar.

Go approx 1/2 mile north of Rt 30 on South Main in Greensburg. Just past the intersection of South Main and Mt. Pleasant streets, look immediately left into the parking lot of The Headkeeper tapas bar at 608 Main Street (I think that's what the sign says). Beerhead that I am, I've never gone for the fancy food, just the great selection of brewhas. Go inside, make a hard right, and you'll see many cooler doors. Pick, grab a seat, ask for a mug, and enjoy; or, grab as much as you can (it's cheaper if you take it out) and head for the sanctity of your own couch. The place started out as a great beer shop and only recently added food, but their selection rocks. See if they still have any Penn Brewing Co. Brewer's Reserve St. Nikolaus Bock. Can't miss it- comes in a one pt+ bottle in a snazzy red velvet bag. Maybe I'll save mine until Christmas dinner...Dave:cool:

Hey, I am out in the sticks in New Mexico. Limited supply of stuff here. I am will be here for 4 more days, then its off to Venezuela again (big sigh of relief).
OK I've discovered a couple gems in the last month I want to share. First are two brews I sampled at a local Humane Society benefit called the 12 beers of Christmas. Two of the twelve were familiar to me but I was treated to two really good beers I had not had before. Delirium brewings Noel, from Belgium but not a white, dark, very flavorful and 10%abv, fantastic, my fav of the twelve. Also very good is another from Belgium called Stille Nacht, a little of the Belgian white flavor but not a true white. Good stuff both!
I also discovered a beer called Crooked Tree IPA by Dark Horse Brewing that is very good! Dry hopped which seems to mellow the hoppy bite just a tiny bit and let the flavor come through. I'm enjoying one right now! :)

Yeah.
I am bottling the batch tonight and I am really excited how the beer turned out with the homegrown hops. I also baked some of the malted barley in the oven to give the beer a little caramel taste which was also a first for me. The beer fermented more than usual (The fermenter cap bubbled steadily for about two weeks.), so I will not be surprised if the alcohol content is higher than usual. I was expecting about 5% but it could be closer to 6%. I'll take a reading tonight and find out.

I just bottled up my IPA batch tonight and it ended up being 7.3% abv. I drank the beer out of the hydrometer tube and even without being conditioned and it being warm it was pretty damn good!
All the dry hopping sucked up a lot of the brew as I only got 4.4 gallons out of a 5 gallon batch. I could of added water before bottling to bring the total to 5 gallons but I figured why do that and wonder what it could of been down the road.
Its going to be a long 2 weeks waiting for the first real sip.

how do you make yours? do you use one of those brewers best kits?
Spatafore
01-17-2008, 11:18 AM
I got started in homebrewing about 8-9 years ago with one of the kits. I think it was about $70. Then I invested in a 4 gallon pot, a 5 gallon jug or "carboy", wort chiller, and a few other items to streamline the process.
The kits come with a can of liquid malt extract. Usually they are 3.3 to 4 pound cans. That will make your typical light beers. I like to jack it up some for character. This batch was made with 8lbs of dry light malt extract, 1lb of crystal malt (grains) and 1/2lb of 6 row malt. I have also made imperial stouts with 9-11lbs of extract along with grain.
If you are interested in homebrewing, the book The Complete Guide to Homebrewing is a must in my opinion. Many consider this as the homebrewer's bible.

I went to one of my favorite watering holes last night for a pint of Dale's and they no longer have it on tap. The bartender said that they rotate some of the brews and Dale's was sent down the road to make room for a new brew. I'm totally freakin' bummed!
On a positive note, Bushwallers has 3 tap towers with 6 beers on each and no Anheuser Busch products! They also pour the best pint of Guinness in town.:)

What do you use for bottles? I'm super interested in this; especially after meeting cerevaise.... thanks for the tip on the book.
I have to admit the Moylan triple IPA or "Hopsicle" as they label it was a bit much, and I consider myself a hop lover. But I prefer their DIPA. The Hopsicle is almost painfully hoppy. Kinda like chewing hopps, not that I ever have, but you get the idea. It made want a drink of water.

Tonight's beer was Shiner Bock, that little ol' beer from Texas.
I was at a Country-Western bar listening to honky tonk music and the Shiner beer fit right in.
If you're up here and down south or out west again and you can find it try the Shiner Black or the Shiner 99. Both have their own individual qualities. The 99 is a special yearly brew they do leading to their 100 year anniversary. This years’ is a little lighter and hoppier than in years past and the black is well......dark and black.

The orignal shiner is like the semi-athlectic girl who was your best friend in high school. You thought she was semi-good looking and nice but you wanted the hot model/hooter babe looking chick who sat next to you in english. But eventually the more you hung out with the "best-friend" chick you realized more and more that she was right for you while the hooters chick became a little to stout, strong, or "played-out" after a while.
Now, if you want the hooters girl who also meets the qualities of the best friend chick......try one of these if you get the chance.

I tried all 8 beers (their entire menu at the moment) at the Elk Creek Brewery and Cafe in Millheim, PA (about 20 miles east of State College PA and the Rothrock State Forest) this past weekend.
Their sampler costs 8 bucks and for that you get 7 5oz glasses. The one that didnt come with the sampler was their 8.5% dark brew (I cant remember the name but it doesnt matter because there is only 1 barrel left and will be gone shortly) but I tried that as a glass on its own. That was actually my favorite one of all.
It was dark and had a strong, bold taste yet shortly after you swallowed it there was no aftertaste whatsoever. I thought "Man, I could drink 3 or 4 of these."
The sampler was presented as all samplers should be. They were laid out in front of you with a brief description from the waitress and there was a small card you could read as you drank. Some were better than others but overall they were tremendous.
We were there on a Saturday in late afternoon and it was nice as the band that was scheduled that evening was warming up with some acoustic stuff and testing out the sound. Nice paintings hung on the wall (all from local artists and all for sale) in the recently redecorated facility. The building itself was probably 100 years old. Our table in an alcove looked out over Main street and we saw probably 15 Amish horses and buggies go by. The menu consisted of all local fare and basically changes every two days. I never had a burger from a pasture raised cow but it was damn good. It came with fries that reminded me of the kind you get at Kennywood (local amusement park). They still had the skins.
Its probably a bit out of the way for anyone riding in Rothrock to try when they get there this summer but its well worth the trip if you have some extra time. The sophisticated spouses some of us have will appreciate the total package and the beer is great.

4 beers w/ significantly higher alchol content - 3 belgians and an IPA. They all really kickass. I'd highly recommend - especially the long strange triple...

So what's the travel time from our planned camping for the forum ride to this brewpub? I love a cool brewpub!!
Its probably too far. Now there is a place right off of Atherton (just outside of State College) named Ottos that you can purchase Growlers of Beer and take them with you. If anyone is coming from the east they could hit Millheim (and grab a Growler there also) but more than likely once you get set up in camp the idea of taking a half hour/forty minute drive for beer....not so sure who would but up for that.
To taste some of this sweet nectar the concept of picking up a big jug of quality beer and then taking it to the campsite is probably the best solution.
I'm actually not sure exactly where the Forum Group is camping. Was that decided? There are others who post on here who know way more about that area than I do. I'm a 'burgher.

Not sure a consensus is even possible, especially since so many small breweries have limited distribution. But I love the two you listed that I've had the pleasure of sampling. Spatafore what;s your homemade Kahlua like? My only experience with a homemade Kahlua was a mixed bag. It came out late at the LBS Christmas party 06. I was fine with my significant buzz, maintaining well, and very social. The owner of the Kahlua starting passing it around, and did mention it was around 140 proof, but it tasted like chocolate milk. They're doing some cool stuff at that brewery - organic & sustainable stuff. Plus, I've never had a beer from there I didn't like. I think my favorite is their Hibernator. I wish I could get it year round!

Trying Buckye Brewing Co. "Hippie IPA" this afternoon. Rode to/from work today and am replenishing fluids, what? Very good example of the style, harkens my limey soul back to service to the king in India.
Nap time soon.

I had "Mojo Rising" Imperial IPA from Boulder Brewing(?) Tuesday night. I might have a new fav. beer in that category now!
...OK I just went on the brewery's site and can find a Mojo IPA only. Not sure if the bar advertised it wrong or if there is a Mojo Rising Imperial IPA that is not listed on the site. Only one way to find out. Gotta go to the bar and drink another and check out the tap handle. :)

Saturdays from 12 to 6 they run an open house for tours and tasting . . . for five bucks, you get a swell engraved pint glass and a sample of the brew.
The girlfriend and I went to a vineyard on Saturday, and while the wine was really good, they only poured us a thimbleful of each type. After we drank a bottle of their Seyval Blanc, we drove to the brewery. When they poured a sample, your glass got filled up more than half way. Want some more? Yep. We'll pour some more.
"More Than A Mouthful" Watermelon Ale - slightly pinkish, smells like a watermelon Jolly Rancher, tastes fuggen good!!
We also tried the Irish Red and the Blonde Ale, both very good.
In the area, check it out. I wouldn't recommend riding your bike there though - some seriously rough neighborhoods surround the place.

during the recent vacation to Vermont I got hooked on Long Trail (http://www.longtrail.com) Ale Belgian Wheat . . . . damn tasty stuff, perfect after an hour out in the mud.

We went to a local brew pub, Maple Leaf Brewery in Wilmington VT, only to find out they no longer brew! Their brewmaster / owner moved to Florida to start a new place. They did have a nice selection from FlyingDog (http://www.flyingdogales.com) which I was happy to sample, including Tire Bite.

I LOVE Long Trail. Had at least a 12er of their Summer Survival Pack assortment in my fridge all summer - Belgian White, Blackbeary Wheat, Ale, and Hefe. Mmmm, mmmm good!

I finally tracked down some DFH 120 minute IPA. Pretty good stuff, but I don't think I'd drink it on a regular basis, even if it was availible all the time. I like beer that I can drink a few bottles of (okay more than a few :D ) without falling down. 20% abv is no joke.

120 is a little too earthy tasting for me. 90 would have to be my favorite IPA from DFH.
I opened on of my last Imperial IPAs that I brewed on New Years two nights ago and it has gotten malty to the point where it is a dead match to Delirium Nocturnum now. Damn beer changed styles on me! :D

About a month ago OTB turned me onto New Belgium 1554. I gotta say, I'm really diggin on this beer lately. I have half a sixer left in the garage, at home. It's so much better at room temp. If you haven't tried it, you need to.

The 90 is very good, but still a little on the strong/heavy side for post ride pints. I happen to be lucky enough to have a DFH alehouse 10 minutes away. You can get 75 minute IPA's there which is a 50/50 blend of the 90 and 60. It kinda sucked last week though. They ran out of 90 and couldn't do the math to make a 75 out of 60 and 120.

Well, since you're into that sort of thing......
I'd be a lot less hefty if all my rides with friends didn't end up with us drinking high-octane beers for hours on end. I's just sayin'.:D

I like beer, but don't spend much time in this thread so if I'm repeating something, sorry.
The wife and I were out crusiing on the MC this past weekend in SW WI and came across http://nationalbrewerymuseum.org/ in the little town of Potosi, WI (http://www.kcrg.com/news/local/24048294.html)
It just opened this past June and all you hopheads out there might enjoy a visit someday.

Wednesday night I cracked a .750ml bottle of Unibroue Edition 2004 and last night it was a bottle of Edition 2005.
Edition 2004 was great! Belgium Triple-style with a slightly sweeter note. 2005 was also good. Darker, and maltier then 2004

That bottle of Chimay along with a fifth of Balvenie is coming with me to Jim Thorpe PA. I'm heading up there after work with some friends to do a little riding on some sweet and rocky PA singletrack. There's also the 2nd Annual Bluegrass & Anthracite Heritage Festival on Saturday.
That's not actually where my house is. I live in Germantown, MD. It's just a spot overlooking Harpers Ferry, WV that I like to go to sometimes. I noticed the jet flying over one day when I was playing around on Google earth.

Hops-
How went the festivities? Didja hook up with fixdwhl? He rides Jim Thorpe sometimes.
As a consequence of my last Dr appt. we found ourselves at the Cleveland Whole Foods over near Coventry. They had a respectable beer selection. I was able to finally get Penn Brewing's Oktoberfest (a rarity in Ohio), and Buffalo Bill's Pumpkin Ale. I don't usually partake of flavored or odd specialty brews, but I gotta say...both yummie

We never made it to the festival. We rode 'till late afternoon on Saturday. By the time that we made it back to town, the festival was almost over.
No, I don't know fixdwhl.
Buffalo Bill's eh? Ya ever try this one:

This was OK. I do like ciders if not only because of their history in colonial N. Am. This one wasn't any better than Woodchuck some of the home mades that I've had.
A roomate of mine in college inadvertantly made hard cider in our frige one year. I took a sample to the org. lab and had a GC run to make sure it was ethanol first. I guess my adventurous spirit does have boundaries.

Not to worry! Methanol is the only alcohol that will blind/kill you and yeast can't make it.

Yeah, I know that now. Back then I hadn't yet had enough edumycation.
I'm pretty sure ispropanol can also make one very ill, but again, Sacchoromyces yeast cannot produce it.
