I need to get a special bike for a special someone, of the 4 foot stature. I'm thinking of a bike thats pretty old school. Anyone got some ideas as to what model? I'm not really pleased with the BMX bikes for kids.

Probably as a street bike with some off roading. This is mostly
a mild rider, no jumping or anything like that. A quick learner
that could learn gears and handbrakes. Comfort would be important for long stints in the saddle so I'm thinking an upright
posture.

My kids rode 16" BMX bikes form the LBS, then as they grew I searched for 20x1-3/8 race bikes. No reason a 50lb. kid should ride a 25lb. bike! You'd be surprised how inexpensive a really nice mini/junior race bike can be had. These bikes have limited use/life 'cause kids grow out of them. Check craigslist, your local BMX track/network, and eblag. $300+ bikes for under $100:eek:
The two bikes I picked-up are super light - the kids fly on them. I'm altering them slightly for light mtn biking and the kids love 'em! It's a cool feeling to be on your fave ride and see your 7yo leave you standing on an open stretch of trail.
Back to their 16-inchers - I put 24T front sprockets on them, and 20" suspension forks (still with a 16" front wheel). They love these things even more, and started riding off/over/on everything they could find!
The 2008 stage of this evil plan is a freeride park in the back yard, with height options on each stunt.... Hopefully the 16" wheels will hold-up until they move-up to a 20"-wheel freeride bike.
Pictures to follow....

I beefed it up with some blinking LED lights, slime in the wheels
and a giant bell on the bars. The model I got was black.
The kid loves it!
