There's always this option, more money, but more instruction time too. As the saying goes, an investment in yourself and your education is never a frivolous investment.

There's a kayak building school in Oregon, and another in Washington that I'd like to attend...also about 2k but you walk away with a new sea kayak that you built. That'd be cool.

It's like shop class, but for adults. And hopefully with less severed digits.
When you figure that a custom frame can cost that much, the idea of spending that money and learning to do the work as well as having a custom frame when you're done is a great investment. Just do it before your arms are too short to get things in focus.

I know a few guys who have gone through the UBI school (http://www.bikeschool.com/) and came out with some fine bikes. One guy, J, wasn't satified with his Merlin and wanted a better Ti bike. What he made was amazing! He used a tandem sized Ti downtube for a stiff BB. He turned out a top-notch Ti bike with really nice welds.
