Does anyone ever do this? its a lot easier than doing it alone via car, and less suspicious than having a getaway driver and walking investigator combo. Especially due to the height of a rider on a typical bike its easy to just cruise on by and peek over the edge. Plus, you get the added fun of hauling whatever odd random object, usually too big to be carried safely on a bike, home, especially for the stares you get. I love alleys between housing, theres all manner of goodies in the trash. Its fun riding home with a large wall mirror sticking out of your pannier, tied upright to your rack with string you find by the trash. Heres a fun one too, find an old box fan, tie the end of the cord to you rear rack or seatpost, and ride through town, lots of noise, lots of looks, plus, if you swerve violently the fan swings up besides and sometimes in front of you, excellent dodging/bunny-hop practice!

dumpsters yeild many treasures. my friends are all about dumpster diving. strangly enough it seems to be a less than glamorous hobby but who cares, its free and doesnt belong in a landfill. i myself search the neighbor hoods during big garbage days. the ghetto is full of classic bikes, many are ready to roll as is.

yeah,, all sort of usable thing, and all sorts of oddities. Like once behind Kmart we found the giant old sattelite reciever for the kmart radio station. Landfills are a good place to, theres a transfer station nearby that always has a great selection of bikes, many of them in great shape,

many of the stores here in Crawfordsville have trashcompactors, so the pickings are slim...i've never really found much other than boxes and trash...but it's all hit and miss, i'll just have to keep looking till i get lucky :D

my friends are hooking up a 6 foot airflow trailer to their bike tonight and hitting up trader joes. i don't know what they plan on bringing bakc on that thing...but we'll see. the friend of mine that owns it once dumpstered a couch on that thing, and rode a few friends around town on it....just because he could.

I have found the most success on college campuses at the end of semesters - hit the dorms and the apartment complexes for loads of stuff being chunked by college kids who don't want to bother moving it. Some of it is as nasty as used college furniture would be expected to be, but there is also lots of good stuff. But I did not do it by bike, so I guess I lose points there.

Living here is State College PA with Penn State, dumpster diving at the end of the semesters is great. I have picked up some great bikes, an old Diamondback Axis Pro with all 7 speed XT stuff w/o wheels or a fork, a great old Italian lugged touring bike that was too big for me but made a great gift, a Takara road bike I turned into a SS and a whole fleet of mid and low priced hybrids and mountain bikes I've given to friends and co-workers.
I have also picked up a lot of lumber, extra fans and even an old Mac SE/30 I turned into an aquarium.
