I've always been a bit of a fan, often thought to myself that Damn the Torpedoes is among the greatest Rock-n-Roll records of all time, but having just watched Runnin Down A Dream, the 4hour DVD documentary I have a newfound appreciation for Tom and the band. I highly suggest any fan of Rock-n-Roll of the 70s-80s-90s watch it. It is long, but it never felt drawn out, was never boring. It really shows what integrity they had. It showcases Toms fight against the record companies when he discovered he didn't own his own catalog, and also a few records later another fight about the price of his new release, the record company wanted to increase teh price of records starting with his current album, to "set a standard", he fought and won. The price of a new record didn't get to the price point they wanted for a couple more years. The movie really put out there what a great songwriter Tom has been and how devoted to putting out good records he is, even to a fault. At one point early on, Tom is expressing sadness that a person he considered a friend chose to side with the money instead of with Tom (a friend), later on he sides with the quality of the music instead of (friend) Stan Lynch, original drummer. Different situation but also quite similar. Tom took different a side in each case, proves he's human like the rest of us. It's a great story about a really great talent in Rock-n-Roll. I suggest all fans of rock try to see it!

I was a bigger Tom Petty fan before I realized that some of his biggest hits were Byrds covers, and that his versions sound exactly like theirs. It's almost like they are a Byrds cover band.

That being said, I will take you up on your reccomendo anyway. Thanks!

cMc, in the Petty collection I have (roughly half their records) there are no covers of any band. But I will say their first two albums have quite a few songs that sound like Byrds songs with current (for the time the songs were recorded) recording/production/mixing. T.P. makes no bones otherwise, he admits the Byrds were a huge influence. In defence, the band members were all under the legal drinking age when each of these albums were recorded, I'm willing to give a little slack seeing as they developed their own sound quickly enough.

And for the record while I have thought to myself that Damn the Torpedos should be among the greatest RnR records of all time, I'm not sure it belongs real close to the top. :D Great yes, greatest, not so much.

You're shooting for irony, right?
