OK.

This is a Craig's List score !!! I have less into this bike so far than a new frame alone would cost.... But, don't get me wrong. This is my dream bike...

Titanium IF Deluxe 1x9.

That's a slick looking ride. Especially for a CL find.

I gotta ask: How much did it set you back?
Looks like a hell of a bike.

Looks like that chain would bounce offa da ring.

It bounced once. I'm trying to not have to run bash or guard, but am prepared to do so if it needs it.

I mostly ride SS, and am a total Gear-tard, so this is my experiment in having a "few" gears and learning to not kill them. When it bounced, it was my fault, shift and stand on the pedal at the same time. I'm learning to read/judge the terrain, pick a gear and live with it or walk. That's what I do on my SS. ;-)

A DH front ring might help. Some of em have pretty deep teeth. I ran one on a hardtail I converted to ss that for a while had a terrible chain line, and my chain fell off much less frequently, though it did still happen until I bought a better spacer kit (should post a link to Misfit's site here, but can't be bothered).

There's nothing wrong that a Singleator wouldn't cure.

DH ring's not a bad idea. It wouldn't have shift ramps/pins to encourage chain droppage.

i ride a 1x9 setup on my devinci too, with all the same components in the back actually, down to the cassette (pg980 if i'm not mistaken). the chain used to bounce off every once in a while, but i put an outer bash guard as well as an inner bash guard and it's been smooth sailing ever since. some people told me i'd still have to run a box guide if i'm gonna hit downhill trails at all, but it hasn't budged.

Thanks for the advice. When you cross the chain a bit, does the chain drag on the bashguards? Do you have some pics of your setup? The cassette, btw, is actually an '07 XTR. I'm pleased with the setup so far. I'm going to ride it again tomorrow; would love to see the pics of your setup.

thanks.

Jim.

my gunnar is a 1x9 and i use a bashguard and a jump stop, never ever had even a minor issue during normal rides or mashing at the races. i'd rather not have to worry about it than worry about 3oz.

btw, how are those goodridge brake lines? ive always been curious if you can feel the no compression that much compared to normal lines.

They are awesome, although I don't have anything with which to compare. This is my first set of discs and my first set of hydraulics. They look awesome, eh? Also.. I'm in love with those Hayes levers. I scored those from a buddy who really knows how to hook a guy up. (Thanks -chuck)

You're welcome Jimbo. The levers are really the cat's pajamas...the bees knees...the best aftermarket levers for Hayes discs that one could find. And remember, I'm only leasing them to you until your retro self takes over again and you decide to throw a set of cantis on that Ti beauty.;)

Well.

I took the bike out on its second ride today. I made the mistake of deciding to fully test it, and went with Upchuck to Cheseboro trail-head. Well, we rode up to Shepherd Flats, and in-between are quite a few fairly technical/rocky and generally "bumpy" sections. DANGIT!!!!

You all were right, chain kept falling off. So, I think I'll be investing in all three.

1. Salsa DH chain ring.
2. Salsa (elegant) Bash Ring.
3. Jump-Stop for the inside.

I actually have a XTR front derrailleur, and an X-9 shifter, but, as Upchuck says, I always have to do things non-conventionally. I really want to go 1x9.

Now to the ride.

I rode the most technical stuff I have ever ridden faster than I have ever ridden it, both up and down. As usual, Upchuck buddied up with a local riding full suspension and then had to hang on his rear wheel (riding SS and fully rigid) the whole way down. Of course, that put me in the position of hanging on his (Upchuck's) wheel as well. IT WAS SOOO FUN !!!!!

When the chain is on, this bike is the coolest thing I have ever ridden.

There's a couple of options to consider, a lighter Blackspire Mono Veloce SS chainring instead of a DH ring and an Envy (http://www.envygear.com/products/doubleepage.html) or Blackspire (http://www.universalcycles.com/shopping/product_details.php?id=4039&category=58) inner chain guide.

How does it work with chainline? I have considered running something like this on the inside. I think the issue would be chainline and ...right now the XT cranks almost hit the chainstays. I'll do some measuring.

Thanks for the help.

I am running a Black Spire on my old 5-bolt Race Face Turbo crank on my Merlin. When I put on the ENO wheel the other day, it lined up nicely. The Black Spire is a real nice chainring.

You'll have to scroll down to see the front ring photo.
1 X 9 set up. BlackSpire DS (dual slalom) front ring. No pins or ramps.
N-Gear Jump Stop. Threshold Bashring on the outside. But, I'd love to see a photo of the Straightline Components inner ring/outer bashring set up. Looks like it'd be sweet for trail riding. And, with the inner ring having urethane on the outer edge, it wouldn't clank around.
