I've been subscribed to James Wilson's newsletter and podcast for a while and he seems to know what he's talking about. Before I dive in and buy the package, has anyone out there tried it?

I'd like some reviews beyond the testimonials on the site.

A different James Wilson than the one I know (http://www.obsessionbikes.com/). The one I know also runs training classes and seminars at their shop, and he's been getting himself back in race form, having just run LaRuta. Don't know anything about the other James Wilson.

This looks more like a strength program with a lot of body weight exercises (no gym equipment required). He doesn't concentrate on aerobic conditioning in the least bit.

I met James last March at Gene Hamilton's MTB camp. I liked his approach. James is a quiet, serious guy who is very knowledgeable, is in great shape and can really ride.
I don't have a lot of experience with workout programs in general and I wanted a mtb specific approach, so I bought his program. I have not been disappointed. I'll admit that is a little overwhelming, all 205 pages of it, plus the demonstration DVD. It is an in-depth, long term program. James gives you his theory behind the program, not just the exercises. It took me some time to figure out how to use it for my more recreational purposes.
A bonus is James' fairly regular emails with various tips, video demos and pod casts. My advise is this: try it, its not that expensive. But, if you aren't ready to pony up $97, he also has a more condensed program that is less in depth, it is called the MTB DB Combos 12 Week Program. The price is $17.00, and, for that price, I think its worth a try. If you hate it, you haven't lost too much, if you like it, you will really like the Ultimate Program. I am not sorry that I spent the money.

Try this:
http://www.dbcombos.com:80/
It mentions an offer that ends on 2-29, but if you click the "add to the cart" button it will take your order for $17. I am in the third week and am liking it. Its quick, and I feel like I'm getting some results. Now, if the weather would just cooperate, maybe I could could actually try some of this newfound fitness out on my bike.

another option is the thug workout (http://www.metacafe.com/watch/436701/thug_workout_fitness_from_the_streets_th ug_workout/) (did i see that on this site or somewhere else?)
but in all seriousness, is this ultimate MTB workout worth paying for? is it better than just riding really hard, a lot?

Judging from that guy's build, that must be the workout that Steve Peat uses.
