Here's what seems to be a little known fact:
The character Uncle Tom died from a beating he recieved while protecting 2 escaping slaves hiding above him in an attic. Sure made me think differantly about what an Uncle Tom is.
I'm not sure exactly how many people realize that my[regretable:o]screen name is a literary reference to a fantastic piece of American literature: 'Native Son' by Richard Wright. I believe it should be required reading in the USA. The book is set in Chicago and is about an anti hero that you can not love named 'Bigger Thomas'. You sure can feel his confused pain though. Oprah plays his mom in the 1987 movie version.
Another great book which I consider to be the polar opposite but almost as good is 'Invisable Man' by Ralph Elison[sp?]. About a talented student who starts in a southern college and winds up in NYC w/ Marcus Garvey types in Harlem. In the southern portion of the book,Booker T. Washington is satirized harshly.
Then there's the classics like 'Malcolm X' and 'Soul on Ice' Non-Fiction
I once got to meet Angela Davis. I had a cotton shirt that loooked like a prison shirt on. She looked at it funnny like she thought I was a crazy ex-con. But she signed my copy of "If They Come in the Morning"
This is an Obey Shepard depiction of Angela from back in the day. She had grey dreads when I met her.
