here is the cast off... I started day one of rehab on Monday... very little exercises are allowed...
I have lost a total of 3 inches around my calve...
there is still lots of bruising on the foot where I have a chip fracture in the navicular bone just at the tip...very painful...
the fibula seems to be healing, but not 100%, so I still have to wear the air-cast...
my skin is scaley and snake-like and the skin around the fractures and foot feel like leather... ick...
some were anxious for me to get my legs up again... don't be too scared... ick... it looks like all yucky... and still looks like it gots meat on it, but remember I am resting it - so the flab spread...
and yes I did shave it!:D

yeah... I go for day 2 of rehab on Friday... I am tempted to ask the physiotherapist if I can strap my air-cast on the bike that is on the trainer and at least get the quad in shape till I have full mobility of the ankle...:)

Hemp, that was funny about the cast on the stomach,LOL!

The left leg looks pretty good. how'd you break the right one?
both legs looked the same before the break... there is a bit more definition to the left leg due to carrying the weight of the right dangling on crutches...
I found my left leg is strong now... never used to be - so this might be a good thing in the long run...
broke the leg playing soccer... don't ask...:p:D
just started putting minimal weight on it still wearing the air cast ...this cold front we are having is not helping the pain any...:(

hmm... how do you know?
may have already set myself back... I slipped over the weekend and instant reaction was to slam my bad leg down to catch me from falling to the floor when my crutch slipped on some water on the tiles ... pain was about as intense as when I broke it...
will know more on Tuesday when I see the specialist again...
I'll will do my best to make sure I don't injure myself...
no more bad karma!

Very good advice -- and worth repeating.
In my senior year in high school I broke my right knee cap in half. During the rehab period I got antsy, pushed it, and man did it push back. I can claim youthful stupidity for that one. Still, that injury is what turned me on to cycling.
The next stupid move I can try to excuse as just being so happy to be back on a bike after letting an injury and illness rule my life for almost 6 years. Doesn't change the fact that it set me back for about 7 months :o.
Stay patient and get well; that precious diSSent will pay you back in spades for waiting till you're truly ready to ride :)

staying as patient as I can, but it is not only me that is trying to stay patient... my poor dogs are only getting walked 2x a week as I cannot afford to have them walked everyday like I was doing ...
diSSey is waiting in the basement, where I can't see her and crave for a winter ride...:D

so I have been able to put about 50% weight on my leg while it is still in the aircast and crutches...
today I go to my next rehab appointment... hopefully they will give me some more exercises to do...
I was at the fracture clinic yesterday and they said the bone was healing very nicely and lining up nicely... good news... only bad news is I am in this air-cast and at home for another 4 weeks (at least)...
I need to work on balance right now only cause they want me to ween myself off the crutches within the next two weeks... I tried, but damn near fell flat on me bottom!:p
ok, I was able to throw a leg over the trainer, but can't push myself up off the pedals... so slowly... I say by next week, I can at least pedal lightly...
I did however jump on my gazelle trainer to work on balance and did some stretches...
slowly getting there...

works for me, especially when mixed with coffee, diet pepsi, and camel smokes. Also a nice 08 vintage brew is nice just to mix things up a bit. A couple fried hotdogs mixed in with those noodles will provide nearly .5 grams of protein, you will need this to regain your muscle mass.

makes one appreciate how invaluable good health is, doesn't it?
when I ride or especially when I let racing get too serious, I try to remember how damn lucky I am compared to some folks who are battling issues such as yours or even much worse. Helps keep me grounded.
hope you got all those books you wanted to read finished, as it looks like it won't be long before you're out kicking ass with BOTH legs.:D

week 9 of being in hell...
I am slowly... S-L-O-W-L-Y weening myself off the crutches...so that i can just walk with the cast on... they want me off crutches by end of the week...
I have tried to put 100% weight on the leg, been tough as the weather has not been kind... and all this change makes the bones ache and the injury swell...
walking with one crutch for a day and my foot already is so sore I can't even walk on it at all today... just as well... I need to rest ... been having a hard time sleeping these past few weeks...
I need a massage and vacation when this is all over!!!
tomorrow physio...

now to strengthen the leg enough to be able to drive!
they have doing pool therapy 3 times a week and land therapy once a week...
can't do stairs, but am allowed to walk around the house without the cast...
have to be careful at work... they told me I can keep the cast with me if my leg gets fatigued... and right now, it is very sore in the joints and my knee is just swollen like a son of a gun...
soleus and peroneous longus are super sore as muscle atrophy is not fun!!!
got a few exercises on land... now just walking in my shoes and it feels very strange...

Sounds like its coming along nicely. Again, just pace yourself. Now is the time when you'll be most likely to re-injure it.

Slow and steady wins the race, Mys. Turtle. You have at least until the 17th of July until you have to ride...

17th of july! HELL NO!!! I plan on riding well before then...
last time I was on my bike, in the dirt, breathing stale leaves that have fallen due to weather change was like... November!!! AHHH!!!!
pooooopies... I am just riding my trainer now...

It means you are, in fact, human. Healing is like that...good days and worser ones.
Don't worry, your secret is safe with me.
Still, you don't have to ride any time sooner than July. At least not in my book.

I am slapping on new tires this weekend and going to take her for a spin... My SS that is...
I am doing accupuncture and physio and trying to increase my walking with my dogs...
I have developed tendonitis in the ankle now - preventing me from pivoting... so back to flat pedals it is...:(
I am trying to train on the indoor bike, but not motivated at all... cause everyone is outside now...
I am going to have to take up another non-impact sport to keep my mind from going nuts not riding...
leg still swells up like someone pumped it with air... looks nasty... bruised and yuck... oh joys...

Mysty here, reporting live from the newsdesk... ok maybe not the newsdesk, but I'm damn close as I work for the a television, radio and newspaper media company:D
so today I am at the physiotherapist's ... and as she's performing ultrasound on my ankle, I saysym to her... so do you think I can NOW ride my bike on the trails?
she says she still thinks I am doing too much and has concluded the verdict of chronic tendonitis in my ankle...
I says to myself... perfect opportunity to say - "and how do you think that I am doing too much?"
I walk my dogs 2 miles a day... excluding Wed and Fridays... so what gives... I'm OVERWALKING?? Is there such thing??
Pft... I didn't tell her I was back at the gym... I did tell her that I was using my wobble board religiously... 24631
I have been doing leg press, squats and some upper body work... I cannot believe how weak I am and how much muscle was lost in all this...
anyways... leisure rides, nothing fancy... won't be racing - BUT I will be training to come back strong next season...
Hi ho, hi ho... it's off to the trails I go...;)

Out of curiosity...do physicians and PTs paid by the treatment or a flat rate up there? It just sounds to me that they are really forestalling your treatment some. I've fractured an ankle...cast=four weeks, PT=six weeks. Never missed a beat, even paddled a canoe with the fiberglass cast on my leg.
Mind you, it wasn't as bad as yours sounds. I would still take some form of state regulated health care here too.

I think physicians get paid by the treatment/visit, because if you miss one and don't follow the cancellation period, you sometimes have to pay since healthcare didn't cover it and they lost money. and some PT's are hourly...it depends. it doesn't really matter though, because there's a doctor shortage. they can take as much or as little work as they want, it's not like they have to delay someone's recovery to get more work/visits.

I've fractured an ankle...cast=four weeks, PT=six weeks. Never missed a beat, even paddled a canoe with the fiberglass cast on my leg.
my fracture was in three places ... so I wore the cast for almost 3 months!
they had me wear the fiberglass cast for 3-4 weeks, and then the walking cast for another 6 weeks... I wasn't allowed to put any weight on it due to the way my bones were fractured...
muscle atrophy was so bad that the pain made me feel like throwing up all the time...
once the cast came off, I couldn't walk so the pool theraphy helped me there... that was 6 weeks... oh man... I think I have all these numbers right... I just want to put it in the past!
if you don't show up for PT they discharge you and you have to pay for the rehab... I think it was something like $40-50 per visit... and then you have parking lot fees of $5 a day...
I actually had to do some accupunture treatments as the swelling was still bad... and I can tell you this - the boyz here at work still are calling me "Cankle" as the swelling and bruising is still there...
onwards... ho...:D

No need for name calling here. :D
Yes, a three point fracture is excedingly worse than my simple displaced bone chip anterior to the tibia.
Now the 4 months it took to get back from the ligament sprain and dislocation to my other ankle...that was a vacation. In the 2 or 3 minutes it took for the trainers to stop my screaming the ankle swelled to a point that they had to cut the laces to remove my shoe.
I sometimes still hear that pop in my nightmares, and it happened in 1975.
Wow, I just realized that I have scar tissue older than you...
