View Full Version : What's your BMI?
I'm at 20.4.
Is BMI a meaningful figure or not?

Dunno if it means anything. I don't feel sickly.

IMHO BMI is crapola - body fat percentage is more relevant. I think BMI is still used because it's easy to figure out and you can easily do it yourself.

Seems to me that BMI might be helpful "metric" to convince folks in the "obese range" that they need to make some lifestyle changes. Personally, wouldn't worry about it otherwise....

I calculated my BMI with this calculator (http://www.nhlbisupport.com/bmi/). It shows I am border-line obese at 30.4. How come I can still out climb half the guys I ride with in PLC...Even when I am on my SS? Yes I could lose a few pounds but still...I eat healthy (no junk food...all fresh stuff my wife makes), I don't smoke, I don't drink too much, and exercise regularly. I don't think BMI is an accurate metric.

The last time mine was measured - I think 4-5 years ago, it was 18 something. BUT, if phlatlander's is 24, sheeeeit... mines gotta be pushing 30. I become such a cream puff during the school year.
It seems a big flaw would be an inability to correct for lean muscle mass. You could be +10 or even 20 lbs of lean muscle mass and that would skew your BMI from fit to fat. That's probably why yours is off, Mims. :D
As far as general usefulness as a metric to convince obese America to do something about the fact that 1 in 3 are total fatasses, I doubt it. I don't see Joe Double Whopper with Cheese & Fries through the drive thru every day looking up his BMI to see if he needs a lifestyle change.
Is there some other online type fitness calculator that's a more meaningful measurement tool? I know I could have my bodyfat percentage measured at my gym, and probably for free, but then I get the hard sell for personal training sessions from some dumbass and I just don't want to deal with them.

In order for me to be considered "underweight" for my height (6'0"), I would need to weigh less than 137lbs. I had everyone telling me how sick I looked when I was MTB racing several years back and I weighed 165. I don't think I even had 30 more pounds to lose unless I started donating organs.

Come on, you could drop the appendix, at least. Maybe a spleen? What the fock is a spleen anyway...?
I'm fa(s)t & happy at 6'1" & 155. Screw the haters.

yeah, my sister called my mom and said she was worried about me, she said I lost too much weight since she last saw me 3 months ago. I don't know how she figured that out since I've been within 3 pounds of 165 for the last 8 years...

Don't know. Don't give a rat's ass, either. I feel great, I work kids half my age into the ground, my beloved wife, The Beautiful Miss Kathy cooks almost as good as me. I dearly love a cold 'un or a glass of Bourbon, and my doctor says I'm fine.

LOL! The Beautiful Miss Kathy must be a strong woman?! You may not know your BMI, but your BI (Bitching Index) I'm sure is quite high.
I don't doubt for a minute that you work the younger guys under the table.:D
Thanks for the laugh, I needed it I just dealt with a rude bastard.

I had my body fat % taken when i was working out at school, they told me i had 20% and that was typical of a non-active lifestyle. i asked if having a 8pack and racing every other weekend with training was non-active,you didnt need to check my pulse, you could see my heart pumping through my chest. but they insisted their machines arnt wrong.

I don't remember ever measuring that... this year...
two years ago I was at 21 or 22... which is pretty high for a female...
I will have to measure that again after I resculpt my physique after the doc gives me the green light go!:)

Come on, you could drop the appendix, at least. Maybe a spleen? What the fock is a spleen anyway...?Now that would be the ultimate Weight Weenie approach to bike racing prep.
Let's see, what can we do without... Appendix, tonsils, maybe a spleen (they just seem to get ruptured when you crash hard anyway), little toes don't do much, maybe get some piercings as that would be the human equivalent of drilling parts for light weight. For those guys that just have to use dangerously light weight bike parts, this would be the obvious next step. You could be on to something here.

According to the calculator my BMI is 27.6. According to that I am overweight. WTF?
Going by those figures I should lose 25 pounds. Sounds like bullshit to me.

BMI?.....just skied a 30 mile xc race over the weekend. non-stop for 3:35. Average HR of 154. Total climbing 2,250 ft. (meaning it wasn't flat like going across a lake or golf course)
Cross the finish line, stop my HR monitor, it flashes OBESE as it cycles through the file. Yes, I've been trying to lose weight since forever.
Finished 42 out of 77 in my age group. You all know what xc skiers look like? If not, picture roadies in a bit more clothes standing on toothpicks. I don't look like one of 'em. Look more like a fire hydrant on 2x6's.
Bet I could finish in the top 5 for beer consumption after the race, though! We all have our niche.:D

yeah, the kids got me that T when I was in my 40's.
racing is starting to suck, actually. I did my first race ever in any sport 9 years ago this winter then got into mtn. bike racing 3 years ago. Will probably do a couple every year for old times sake, but think after this winter I'm going to change from chasing myself to just picking new destinations and go exploring, meeting good folks on the trail, whether it be singletrack or snow.
