Thoughts on Brock Lesner vs Frank Mir. Mir looked ripped at the weigh ins. Lesner having had to cut almost 30 lbs, my money would go to Mir submitting him in the 1st round.

...Mir hasn't really impressed in his few fights back from the motorcycle accident. Don't get me wrong I hope skill wins over brute strength, but Lesner is a national level (winning) collegiate wrestler.

I haven't missed a UFC ppv in roughly 2 years but I'm really struggling with buying this one. I noticed the price for this fight is 45$ instead of 40$. That coupled with what I view as (aside from a desire to see how the "WWE sissy" will do in the octagon) a fairly weak card, and the fact that my buddy who usually spilts the cost won't be here I'm not sure I'll pay the price of admission.:eek::mad:

SO I ended up springing for the fight.....Big time WWE star Brock Lesner just lost to the Frank Mir by an ankle lock!? I've seen hundreds of MMA fights and have never seen anyone of them end by an ankle lock, till now!
While I'll admit Brock looked overpoweringly srtong for much of the first round Frank proved that skill does indeed trump power in the UFC. At least it did tonight.
UFC 1-WWE 0. :)

I never watched the fight, but thanks for posting the result. What I find so damn funny about it is that a "wrestler" in the WWE sense would lose a real fight by ankle lock, when that move is a staple of fake wrestling. He probably thought to himself, " Oh, no problem. I'll just flail around on the ground for a minute or two until someone from my corner breaks this hold for me with a chair to the head of my opponent". When he realized no help would arrive, he surrendered.:D

wow, I expected Frank to gas out in round 2...He's been unimpressive in the cardio realm last several years...
the ankle lock was used with success against Tank 2 years or so ago.Frank was a HS state champion here in NV 2 years in a row, he is a damn good wrestler, considering that he wasn't schooled in the midwest, like myself. I rolled with Frankie boy for 'bout 2 years here in town. He's strong and fast and liked to work from his back, obviously, since he was then purple and later brown and black belted by Sergio Penha and Riccardo Peres dojo- both nat'l Brazillian champs....

The card didn't look that interesting, glad I didn't spend the $.... thanks for the update...DD.

Actually, it wasn't an ankle lock it was a knee bar. He was cranking his foot but if you look closer his knee was rediculously hyperextended and would have torn his ACL had he not tapped. Same move Shamrock beat Kimo with in their 1st fight.

If Brock Lessner gets in with a good camp, learns some submission defence he will be a real threat to the title. I can't see anyone stopping his takedowns.

believe it or not but i had pretty high hopes for Lessner before the fight and he pretty much satisfied them even though he lost. he came on strong and put a good hurtting on Mirr before getting submitted. i wasn't really sure he was going to win simply because Mirr has more experience and training on his side but i think Lessner put up a good performance for his UFC debut and 2nd overall MMA bout.

another thing i liked about the fight was afterwards both fighters were very down to earth and humble when being interviewed.

Lesnar’s takedowns were impressive. There hasn’t been a really dominant/explosive freestyle wrestler at HW in UFC since the days of Coleman, Kerr and Randleman. Cotoure’s Grecco Roman clinch is money, but a devastating double leg is a pleasure to behold. If Brock could get into a better camp and bone up on nuts and bolts BJJ/sub defence, he’d be a force. saw that knee bar coming a mile away. can't recall anyone getting caught (successfully) in one of those since Shammy retired although tyson slapped a pretty tight one on edgar last year. Regardless, I can’t see Brock beating a tough grappler ala Nog or Gonzaga but i am really looking forward to seeing how he fares against an elite sprawl and brawler like Silvia or (the old) Cro Cop. fanatstic effort on his part though, espec considering it's his 2nd pro fight.

How about Boetch? that was an incredible Muay Tai clinic he put on. more push/front kicks in one fight than i've seen in all other mma fights combined.

the irony of me sitting on my fat ass in an office, evaluating and describing what fighters need to do to win does not escape me.

I almost didn't even get the fight as I mentioned in an earlier post, glad I did. Lots of good fights! I always record them to a hard disk recorder, this one will probably get burned to DVD to keep.
