Have about 30 pages to go in this book called "Rumspringa" refers to the time when amish teens get to live outside the guidelines of the church for a while until they are baptised members. Really interesting. Many of them go nuts- coke, parties, booze, etc. But like over 90% return to the traditional amish life...

I've driven around Lancaster and hung around the area in PA and Budds Creek, MA too. They don't have a bad life. It's not for me, but at times I'd trade them straight up.

RebSS,
check your PM....
The book sounds really interesting. I love stories about real people having out of their "comfort zone" experiences.
50 are these stories told about a specific group and their experiences, or is it more of a collage of events from nameless folks lives?

A bunch of stories the author compiled from interviews w/ 100 amish teens & community leaders. "Rumspringa" is the title - author is shactman or something like that. Good read. I dig the simplicity component of their theology.

It may not be a high %, but an Amish guy I frequently speak with once asked me how "yankees" handle their kids regarding drugs/alckyhol. I guess my face rather conveyed my shock at the question.
He pointed out that, "Yankee kids aren't the only ones with these problems."
Most that come home from Rumspringe bring their addictions with them. The Amish community have no infrastructure in place to handle it. Families have been ruined and torn assunder. We had a home invasion of one family nearby by a meth dealer because of owed money.
They also have issues with incest and too-close marriage. They are another issue altogether.

The part I'm reading now takes place in that corridor between elkhart, IN, white pigeon, MI and Ashtabula, OH... is that pretty close to you cervaise?
Interesting points. The book hasn't talked about that yet.

Yeppir. I live about 20 miles due south of that zone. I work delivering propane up there. We have a few beards more than 100 of 'em as customers (water heaters in milk houses mostly, a few for WH and refrigerators in homes if their deacon is a little more liberal).
Our house is a little more than a mile north of I-80 (OH 'pike here).

My wife and I just watched the documentary that the author put out along w/ the book. Basically the same as the book. Interesting to actually put faces along w/ the names. I'd definitely recommend either. The documentary looks deeper at the more f'ed up aspects - the drug use, promisquity and such. Very interesting.

50 I haven't read that book, going to put it on my to do list. If you like it you might like Under the Banner of Heaven by John Krackouer(sp?) the guy that wrote Into Thin Air. Banner is about a murder that took place in Utah of a Mormon family and it gives a history of Mormonism. Very interesting book if you haven't read it already.

You all remember the tales of Benjamin Alan Best's Amish escapades? They must've been Rumspringin' when he passed through. ;)

Great book. Read it on my honeymoon (I'm truly the last of the great romantics). Sure is creepy how those fundamentalists live. I really do think that's what killed the Romney campaign. According to Krakauer though, if their numbers keep growing, Mormons are going to be a major political group in the very near future. On another note, love Krakauer. Into the Wild and Into Thin Air are too of my favs - the former for sure. Don't have much sympathy for rich westerners who can pay their way to the top of everest.

Shit. They deleted all his old threads right? I never paid much attention other than to see where he was. I just couldn't get through the language. Kinda like shakespeare you know?
