Cars suck. And if it's not older than me, it's not a hot rod. It's a used car. But whatever floats your boat.

haveta agree with Cranky on this one for sure. If it was a 60's version I'd get a little excited, but, hey don't let us old farts burst your balloon. Whatever you like is really what it's all about.:)

About cars....
Every day you own one, it is a bigger piece of sh*t!

But... since we are in the hot-rodding mood...

Here's mine. For sale... Can't wait to unload it at this point.

it's your car and it's cool that you like it. davkatreb is just a miserable person that is jealous of anyone that has something he doesn't. he's not capable of saying, that's cool, i hope you enjoy it, because joy isn't something he understands. gripe, blah blah blah, complain, blah blah blah, moan, only ride fixies, etc......

my point is that don't let him influence how you feel about your hot rod. enjoy the hell out of it.

jh4rt, that thing is sweet. I bet it looks good with a couple nice bikes in the back! What do you want for it... just out of curiosity. I don't have anywhere to park it and I'm pretty sure the wife would kill me anyway. ;)

I love cars. I hate SUV's, but if it's relatively fast and corners well, I'm down. I prefer Euro machines, but I do like those new Mustangs, especially the Saleen/Roush/Shelby ones that are all hotted up.

I was asking $14.9k, but ... Some guy made an offer today at $13.5k, to a broker I have on consignment with. I told him I'd take the deal. All told, by the time I sell it, I will have only lost about $8500 in the project.

From now on, I'm sticking to bikes and boats.

(oh yah.. and babes... well, just the one I have .. my beautiful wife...)

here is a pic of my boat, my wife and my boy at Fox's on the Colorado River @ Parker.

Billy, nothing against cars as a hobby (I guess). It makes me sad, though, how we've gotten ourselves into this spot where we can't live without them, no matter how we wish that we could. Seems like I spend half my waking hours as a slave to the infernal combustion engine. Maybe it's just that I haven't been riding like I wish I could.

Cars began as a way to seek freedom, now they represent slavery when you look at the big picture.

That said, Love the pickup. I used to own a similar 66 GMC Custom PU. Well, not really similar, It had holes in the floor and was so bad looking that someone chose to set it on fire for me, but still, fond memories.

Other weaknessses include Hondas, BMW's (2002), muscle cars and Rat Rods.

Dave,

If I remember correctly, you live a loooooong way from where you work, right? Like 90 miles or some shit? I mean, sure, you can't ride your bike to a jobsite with all your tools, but it seems you're significantly contributing to your own problem here.

It's all good Dav, I am lucky enough that I don't have to drive a car everyday if I don't want to. I have a (too) short commute downtown to work in the morning. I was raised w/ cars hotrods ,streetrods etc. I try not to let myself be a "slave" but sometimes it happens...

Dave, let's embrace the internal combustion engine for what it is. It's thousands of little bombs going off in sweet synchronized succession. These are bombs that can be used for good. To deliver medical supplies to remote African villages. To allow people to travel to experience other cultures in ways we wouldn't otherwise do so with just books and Google. It allows us to expedite snow removal from our elderly neighbor's sidewalk. Or maybe most important of all, to deliver moonshine. Yes, these tiny little contained piston peace bombs take us places that we could never go before. Sure, some are used to deliver payloads of evil, but remember trees were once peaceful, too until somebody sharpened a branch and poked somebody else in the kidney. That doesn't mean we should burn all the forests down for spite. If anything, we are paying respect to our ancient ancestors. Ashes to ashes. The dinosaurs owe us big for not keeping any solid history records as to their emergence, reign or disappearance. For that we get to burn them.

I'm not following you...

You're making your own mess here. You hate cars, or perceive that you're a slave to automotive culture. Shit fire, boy, if you didn't live 90 miles from your place of employ, couldn't you drastically reduce the weight and oppression of your automotive shackles? I'm not saying that you yourself could realistically be completely free from having to rely on a car/truck or whatever to get you and your materials and tools to the jobsite, but if you could cut 180 miles of driving out of the picture, wouldn't that improve your outlook just a wee bit?

I've made a huge assumption that your beef with cars is having to rely on them to get to work, or traffic, or whatever. If you just dislike the pollution/cost aspects, well, there are viable alternatives. There are cheap little imports that get 40 mpg and emit hardly a fart's worth of carbon monoxide. You could get a motorcycle and get 60, 70 or better. I dunno what specifically your beef might otherwise be... the various human behavior deficiencies that manifest themselves behind the wheel are there in every other aspect of existence; assholes are assholes whether they are in their Escalades or not.

We get it you jerks, cars are coffins. Yada yada. But only two things put a huge smile on my face:

Going a million miles an hour on downhill single track. Hitting jumps and riding berms.

or

Downshifting on the highway to overtake mini vans in my tuned 2007 VW GTI 2.0T. (while not endangering anyone else of course)

I got the manual 6 speed. I know I know, the DSG shift is only 5 milliseconds (faster than a F1) and that if the exact same gti manual vs dsg hit a quarter mile, the dsg would win by a 1.5 car lengths. But i test drove both and i just dont feel "connected" to the car. I feel like the DSG is cheating, because you can easily turn it off into full automatic when going to the supermarket/whatever.

Insert steel/aluminium analogy here.

as for APR, have you looked into Unitronic?

My 2.0T S-Line A4 quattro is a traditional 6 speed manual as well. I mostly prefer the manual to the DSG, but every now and then the DSG strikes me as near-preferable. DSG beats the crap outta SMG (the BMW version).

Never heard of Unitronic, only GIAC and APR.

I was a gearhead for most of my life, still have part of that alive in me. The early 80's Mustangs have never been a favorite, but is it fast(or quick)? If so I like it!

My issue with hot rods is the environmental impact, but most fast cars area kept in pretty damn good tune (so they burn fairly clean) and also aren't really driven that much so their impact is minimal. I own three "hot rods" 1 is for sale, 1 may be pretty soon, one I'd sleep in before I sold it. Don't have any dig pics of any of them but that will change one of these days.

If you love the Mstang then Fook anyone who disagrees!

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Car-building legend Boyd Coddington, whose testosterone-injected cable TV reality show "American Hot Rod" introduced the nation to the West Coast hot rod guru, has died. He was 63.

Coddington died at Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital in suburban Whittier at 6:20 a.m. Wednesday. His La Habra office spokeswoman Amanda Curry wouldn't disclose the cause of death.

Coddington, who started building cars when he was 13 and once operated a gas station in Utah, set a standard for his workmanship and creativity, with his popular "Cadzilla" creation considered a design masterpiece. The customized car based on a 1950s Cadillac was built for rocker Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top.

"That was a groundbreaking car. Very cool," said Dick Messer, executive director of the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles.

"This was your modern era George Barris," Messer said. "He did things to hot rods and customs that weren't being done by anyone else. But the main thing is he designed cars that were drivable."

Coddington was a machinist by trade, working at Disneyland during the day and tinkering with cars in his home garage at night and on weekends. His rolling creations captured the imagination of car-crazy Southern Californians and soon he was building custom cars and making money.

Most often, he customized 1932 Ford "little deuce coupes."

"It was one of those things when a hobby turned into business," Messer said, noting Coddington was also "one of the first guys to get into the custom wheel business."

Wheels by Boyd were fetching $2,000 apiece, which was unheard of two decades ago.

Coddington also surrounded himself with talent. Alumni from his shop include Jesse James and Chip Foose, who went on to open their own shops and star in reality TV shows.

Coddington twice won the Daimler-Chrysler Design Excellence Award and he was inducted into the Grand National Roadster Show Hall of Fame, the National Rod & Custom Museum Hall of Fame and the Route 66 Wall of Fame.

Always dressed in a Hawaiian shirt, Coddington said he loved his "American Hot Rod" Discovery Channel show, which featured ground-up construction of $500,000 hot rods.

"The viewers are ... people who lived in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s and loved these cars. Now, they have money," Coddington told The Associated Press in a 2004 interview.

Boyd did not represent 99% of us that enjoy history and mechanical toys............he screwed many investors in the 90s when his company went under. I hope he is in a good place, but like Lucy "you got some 'splainen to do!"

Most of os hot rodders are not wealthy. So American ingenuity comes into play alot. That and elbow grease:D. Boyd or anyone for that matter can build 500.000 cars. But Thats a checkbook car. Satisfaction comes out of it by being the one who did the work. And then getting to enjoy the fruit of your labor. I have 3 years of work in my car. Yeah it could of been done faster by shelling out the money. But working on it is part of the fun!:)
