I know a bunch of people on here are pretty handy with a camera, so I figured I'd start a thread where we could post pics and/or links to photos that we ourselves have taken. Today was a beautiful day here in NH - mid 30's, brilliant blue sky, just a hint of a breeze, and freshly fallen snow. Last fall I got a Nikon D40x with a Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 lens as an engagement present (she got a ring, I got a camera:cool:). Today was (sadly) the first time I've been able to take it out and just mess around. I've got a lot to learn about this modern marvel, no doubt. My last camera was Canon AE-1 fully manual for which I had a Tamron 28-200 lens. It took great pictures, but at $7 + $15 per roll to purchase and develop the film, I had stopped taking a lot of pictures. It was a ton of fun to get back into it today! All of the pictures are taken with the Nikon/Sigma, and processed minimally (most anyway) in iPhoto '08. Here's a link to my Picasa™ album (http://picasaweb.google.com/RollingBodhisattva/VaughnWoods), plus a couple of highlights of Vaughn Woods State Park - South Berwick, Maine:

Agreed; they're all fine work but those 2 are terrific shots -- thanks for sharing them and creating the topic :)
I've always enjoyed photography along with my other outdoor pursuits. Mainly just for myself, family, and friends. But recently I was talked into posting some of my recent images on Flickr; here's a link ...

Hmmm... would you be interested in parting with any? That's the kind of thing to hang onto for project bikes.
I once had a bike with Suntour XC Expert thumb shifters, an XT Rapid Rise rear derailleur, and GoreTex cables. I could shift from the very bottom gear to the very top (and back) amazingly fast – just shove them things. Sadly the bike got stolen.

This one is from Bondcliff in NH, looking out over the Pemigewasset Wilderness. We had been backpacking for three days in the rain, and this was the first sun we saw on the trip. As heavenly as it looks, after the climb and the previous weather it truly felt like we were at the pearly gates :)

You bet. Guyot is one of my favorite places on earth. A couple of years before I took that picture I was there in similar weather - rainy, crappy, etc. Overnight it cleared up completely, and I got up early and hiked to the top of Bond with my camera and got some great shots of the undercast in all the valleys. The very tip of Owl's Head was just poking out of the clouds, and the very tops of the Willey range too. What a great spot that is, indeed :)

Very cool. I nearly took a modeling job (despite my funny looks ;)) for a sports architecture firm 8 years ago. Back when everyone was building a new stadium/arena, the model department created some amazing schit. Glad I didn't take it since they aren't quite so busy anymore, but I have the shakes anyway so I probably would have been a liability. That teeny figurine looks like it took at least 2 days of continuous squinting.

Yeah, but what sux is this-When the little funkers sneak in here to take American jobs, they bring their disdain for/ignorance of common-sense safety practices with them. Not that big a problem when they're bussing tables or mowing lawns, but get 'em on a real construction site where potentially lethal forces abound, and tell you what-I've seen 'em do things that would turn your hair white.

do you mean an indoor low light shot? there's basically no point and shoot camera that will do a great low light shot without flash. and the flash is almost always too close to the axis of the lens so you get harsh shadows. you need the large lenses and wide apertures.

Is that beach pic of your wife riding on hard-packed sand or is that a huge paved area? If it's sand — it appears the auto tracks hardly make an impression, too. Alternate space shuttle landing strip? :)

There has to be SOME way that I can transfer my real camera pictures to a medium which is compatible with this forum. The bar needs to be raised, and raise it, I will! Or I would, if not for the pesky problem of how to convert silver halide images to ones and zeros.

Perfect. Another infernal box of microchips whose inner depths I must plumb; only to extract the most miniscule modicum of function from its beeping, blinking innards. Just what I need.
No, no thank you, and hell no. What I had in mind was a service performed by a photo lab (are they even called "labs" nowadays?) where my negatives/prints/slides could be scanned-"scanned" is the correct phrase, yes?-onto a disc, the disc could be installed in my computer wherever it goes, and I could include the image in a post. Can such be done? I am sure I would still need to seek the assistance of one of my daughter's nerdy friends, but I'm practically bursting to share with yinz some images from the days when men were men.

We're all nerds, Kevins. I'm a bike nerd, a beer nerd and a guitar nerd. And "knowing this stuff" doesn't make the kid a nerd. Her knowledge is WAY beyond what "all kids know", and tends to work its way into conversations on the most unrelated topics. Is that nerdy enough for ya?

Mims, I could probably grok the inner workings of your digital toy in less than a day, were I so inclined. Which I most certainly am not!.
Could you master the intricacies of shooting with a manual-exposure camera without built-in meter? Would you know how to process the film? Would you have the talent to extract the exact right nuance of tone and contrast from said negative? Perhaps. But these things are not learned overnight.
Think of proficiency with real cameras as the singlespeed of photography, and myself as the keeper of the flame.

Dav,
I have my dad's camera, a Minolta XD-70 with various lenses. Takes way better photos than my little point-and-shoots. I've carried it on a couple of bike tours and glad I did. Last time I did, I took B & W film, so I could try developing for the first time in a dark room we had at school. A fellow teacher helped me and showed me how to do it. It is a cool process. Best part for me was making the prints. I have a couple of good self portraits of me with the Merlin in full touring regalia at the start of the Black Gap Road with the Elephant's Tusk in the background (Big Bend National Park). I rode to the same spot a year apart(Dec. 1997 and Dec. 1998) to see if there was any difference in my persona (1997 was the year my dad died)
I like film photography. It is a dieing art, but to be honest, I enjoy the instant gratification of digital photography. I take a lot more and dump what I don't like.
Just trying to be funny with the above post...

In 1987 I was doing a paleontological dig in the Bisti Badlands in New Mexico's 4-corners region. Around 10:00 AM, every other morning, I'd start looking east. Sure enough here they came...
- First it was just a bright light.
- Then the light was attached to a dark line.
- The dark line took on the shape of a large aircraft.
- The aircraft then revealed itself as a low-flying B-52 - bomber! So low, you could see the rivets.
- They always flew in groups of three staggered about 1 mile apart from each other.
- There were two groups; the camo-green w/blue bellys, and the pure black.
- They seemed to used our camp as a waypoint as they headed toward and through (then called) Washington Pass (now called Narbona Pass) through the Chuska Mountains.
On our last day at camp, we had a plan...after the first B-52 flew over, we sprung into action. Part of the crew laid head to foot on one of the badland desert hillsides, spelling out the word "HI" with their bodies. A couple of us, me included, scrambled to the top of the nearest hill with a towel and swung it overhead, as the 2nd jet flew by slightly to the north. The 3rd jet corrected his course, flew directly over us, and waggled his wings in salute. It was way cool!
Note: photo is sniped from Google, but they looked very much like this but BIGGER and louder!
What every Vonnegut fan should find. I found mine 10 years ago in NC:

True. He is both a very tall man and a tightwad.

It's a spoof if you will, inspired by Vonnegut. I'm sure you have read him reference it in numerous novels of his..

fantastic! how'd you pull that one off? I'd imagine the focus would have to be pretty lucky...my 18-200mm would never focus fast enough

I just used an older Canon G2 and set it to macro. I pre-locked in the focus on my hand (3-4") and then held it out to where she was hovering below her hole on the underside of our deck. Got lucky a few times before she darted off. ;) Thankfully, carpenter bees are docile.

Nice one Carlo.
This one is from my science fair. It is from a cereal box/CD spectroscope we made.
One of my student's took this with my camera. It is of a yellow light, not sure which light he was referring to. Anyway, cool pic in my opinion.

You wouldn't have the materials. Your old crunchy vinyl just doesn't break up light like like these new fangled optical discs do. :p
Maybe you could get some good results from your disco balls?

Scrape the foil off an unburned CD, then cut a "pizza slice" from the CD for the spectroscope which goes over the eyepiece.

I've never seen a cloud do the sundog thing before. I was worried that camera might not capture it, so many rainbows end up washed out when photographed.

There is quite a bit on youtube about Kaufman. With the death of Carlin I started watching some of this stuff from the 70s and early 80s.
Its amazing to think what Kaufman was able to do in the days really prior to cable and especially the internet.
His high desk and Tony Clifton marionette were waaayyy ahead of their time.
I had a TV in my room and watched that Letterman bit with Jerry Lawler when it happened. Classic stuff.
