The beer in this place sucks. The Dutchie’s idea of “real beer” is Heineken. Except most of them drink Polar, which is Venezuelan goat’s piss (back me up on this, mimbresman). The non-European local drink Polar like it was mother's milk.

I love IPAs and Porters but there’s none to be had here. But I found one grocery that usually has Bass (100 Guilders a case/$2.30USD a bottle!!). And lots of places have Guinness bottles, which usually is pretty lackluster but I have a diabolical plan that saves the both of them: The Black and Tan.

Right now, 9:00 p.m., it’s 79°F outside. It’s lower 80s in my living room (no A/C is the norm here, except in bedrooms). And a nice, cool Black and Tan served in my tall, ceramic KGB stein sure is a refreshing treat!

Then just pass the Dutchie on the left hand side.

beer alchemy!

i'm at work and my brain is still foggy, but i recall that the Dutch invented an herb beer in the middle ages. it's gone out of fasion, but is still produced by craft/microbreweries. the name escapes me, but it's pretty good stuff and is available in the states as well.

i also heard it's fairly common for dutch breweries to make seasonal bocks and belgian style.

edit:
the style is called gruit (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gruit).
