Yesterday before I rode home from school I donated a pint of blood. The ride home was fine, but I wasn't pushing it. Had two beers when I got home, but wasn't drunk. This morning I rode to work, slight headwind, slight hurry. I got my ass handed to me! The ride home was fine.

Anyway, anyone ever give blood and then ridden? What were the effects?

I have a 15 mile round trip to the Red Cross and normally ride a fixie,on the ride home you do miss that pint expecially when climbing any sort of hill. You'll be back to normal by the weekend. It is a cheap drunk that night though.Remember in 56 days you can donate again.:D

they don't like green blood?:D

try a different source than the RC, then you'll see if it's them or you.

I guess they are erring on the side of bigotry then? Same thing up here, I believe. I know they aren't taking organ donations from gays in the Great White North anyway. Up here they overreacted after it came out that the Canadian Red Cross was anything but picky with "donations" before. A lot of blood was coming from U.S. inmates, and basically wasn't screened or treated properly, resulting in a hepatitis outbreak, particularly amongst the hemophiliac community.
I'm not allowed to give blood, as I am considered to be high risk for CJD.

Do they have hard numbers to prove that gays are at a higher risk of having bloodborne diseases?

Do they have hard numbers to prove that gays are at a higher risk of having bloodborne diseases?

they were in the 80s, but now it's reversed, at least in the united states. HIV/AIDS hit the gay community hard, but gays quickly started using condoms and now there is a higher percentage of heterosexuals with HIV/AIDS. for some reason heterosexuals don't use condoms as often if the girl is on the pill. the highest percentages now are in the african american and latio american communities.

this is all in the US tho, i have no idea about other countries

edit: actually i was just looking of the CDC website for some actual numbers, and they seem to say that homosexuals DO have a much higher HIV/AIDS infection rate, followed by african americans, and then latio americans. all the research from the report i did in my english class in 2007 said otherwise tho, and i even remember a lot of that being from the CDC. i also recently saw and AIDS documentary that said it was higher in heterosexuals than homosexuals.

i'm confused

The red Cross ask about your life style back into the 70's.i really think they get a little bit overboard when it takes 30-45 minutes of paperwork and 5 minutes to fill the bag.I'm lucky in that my blood is safe for infants and I normally donate every 56 days,I just passed the 3 gallon mark.I feel for the people that want to donate but can't becuase of their restrictions. If they won't take your blood can you donate platelates?

i could be mistaken, but i don't think they let gay people donate any bodily fluids

Giving blood treats everyone differently. The last two times I gave I passed out on the table and had to take the rest of the day off due to nausea, but that's me.

Obviously, you're not getting sick from giving. If I was in your shoes I would simply take a couple days off from riding next time you give. Helping save a life is worth a couple days off from riding. :)

DAYS!? that sounds a bit unreasonable. i'd say don't ride as hard the evening of and the day after. doesn't your body produce blood pretty quickly?

I'm not sure of the statistics either. The only people that I know who are HIV positive are gay. Maybe they are just more open about it, I don't know.

Gay or straight, I don't understand how anyone chooses to have unprotected sex these days.

The red cross are bumbling beaurocratic idiots. I used to be a lifeguard and they have a lot to do with water safety training.

As I remeber the form does discriminate against men who have sex with men.

I think they tell you no strenuous activity for like 8 hrs.

I love to give blood and hurry home and catch a buzz with the unit of blood missing. It would be awesome if they put magic cookies out for you when when you were done.

In high school (note: HIGH school) we used to love Red Cross blood days, 'cuz we got out of class, got a cheap buzz from being a pint low, and got free cookies and orange drink.

Your spleen should backfill the pint over time, but riding hard for a day probably isn't all that bright an idea.

Yeppir, their WSI course is whacked. Lotsa crap one doesn't need, and no instruction on how to cope with idiotic parents of whiney 12 y/o's.

It would be awesome if they put magic cookies out for you when when you were done.

Or, perhaps, brownies with a few special ingredients coming from the flowers of Canabis flowers, no?
