Spokes

I have an old rigid frame Schwinn High Sierra, which I like a lot. My problem is that I cannot figure out the spoke adjustment and spoke key size to fit.
My questions:
1) Does one adjust mountain bike wheel spokes?
2) I have bought 2 keys and the do't fit (too small)..why"
3) I used vice grips and the spoke nuts were VERY tight. Normal?
4) Which direction shortens/losens da spoke?

by the time you spend the gas and money to get the right spoke wrench its better to have a professional do it. vise grips is a no-no. but if you insist try to purchase the Park tool wrench (black) . spray the spoke and nipples w/penetrating oil and wait the next day to attack. to tighten is like standard "lefty loosey and righty tighty".
