View Full Version : Horrible Little Fitness Killer ...

I spent the entire winter doing one of the most intense workout regiments I've ever done, hammered myself to a level of fitness beyond anything I'd done before, and was now in the process of turning it all into bike fitness (pushing sections of my usual ride longer and longer, mostly on SS.) Then, Monday afternoon, I have to leave work because I felt something coming on. Well, from about five minutes after I walked in the door until about 6 hours later, all I did was throw up. Honestly, if I threw up one more time, it would have been my liver that came out -- I couldn't possibly have had anything else left in me. Then I spent the rest of the night shivering under three blankets. I slowly recovered on Tuesday, but I haven't been able to even think of working out since. I know this is a temporary setback, but I feel like I've lost everything in the past three days. (I did lose eight lbs.) I've never been three days out from an illness and not been able to do anything (even a light workout) before. Every muscle in my body still aches, and all I want to do is sleep when I'm not at work. Man, it's amazing what kind of havoc something as small as a virus (I'm pretty sure it's viral since my fever was really high on Monday night) can do to you. I'm sure I'll be back soon, but this is frustrating as hell.

I've been down for 3 weeks. Not viral...bacteria in the lungs. Those little guys are evil. Finished off the antibiotics yesterday. Woke up this morning not hacking or coughing. I feel pretty good.

I've only ridden once (last Saturday) in 3 weeks and I wheezed and hacked up the hill. It was hell, but this week (started Monday) I've been doing the indoor orbital trainer. It is a torture device, but a 20 minute workout gets the heartrate going pretty good, and I feel it in my legs and arms. Monday was hell, Tuesday seemed worse, but yesterday, Wednesday was easy. I looked down at the timer every so often and suddenly I was at 20 minutes. See how today goes.

Hope you recover okay. Sounds like you got a good base, so you'll get the fitness back quickly.

I was recently down for about three days with the flu, albeit a mild case by flu standards. I had the lung-twisting cough version. Could not ride up a hill to save my life. I go through this about once every ten years. I hope you feel better soon.

Sounds like a classic influenza. Little viri can really pound hell on one's immune system. Watch for the malaise that follows. Could be a couple of weeks until you're ready to venture out on a bike and feel good the entire time.

My flu was three weeks ago. Hit me on Wed. afternoon, it was Sunday afternoon until I could function well.

there was something going around here a few months ago. most of my friends got it and it set them all back a week or two. i felt it comming on on a thursday, had some airborne, and slept for like 20 hours straight. i was fine on saturday.

i don't know if it was the sleep or the airborne, a lot of people say it's just a placebo, but next time i feel something comming on i'm using it right away. couldn't hurt to take some now.

every body's been sick around here too. I think I have a nasty case of allergies but I really don't know. I got a whopping 3 hours of sleep last night due to the extremely bad post nasal drip I've got going on. The kicker is that I have no medical insurance or extra money to go to a doctor now.

I'm reevaluating my life today.

Try the nettie (?) pot. If you haven't seen it, it's this kettle looking thing you stick and your nose and it basically drains out your sinuses. I was pretty skeptical at first but I haven't had major sinus trouble in the past two years after having an infection every year since before I was born.

Never heard of that, but I tend to just "live with it" anytime I get sick. I hardly ever take medicines or do other theraputic things that I probably should, but since I've always had sinus problems...

true, true....not a big fan of the pharmaceuticals either so I thought the whole netty thing was a pretty much a pos until I gave it a go, freakin' nice though. I might look like a crack addict using it but it works, I think.

I'll have to give it a shot. It's like a colonoscopy for your nose (rhinoscopy?). I'll report back if I see results or not, but I'm hoping the potential for me to breath easier through my nose could help more oxygen get where it's needed and I'll become a faster rider. ;) As my wife has pointed out to me on several occasions, I only tend to seek fixes for any of these issues if they happen to be hindering cycling in any way. :D

maybe I'll have to try it the days I have trouble getting to sleep because I cant breathe through my nose. maybe it'll cure my ever existing post nasal drip cough?

here, let me make you a cup of tea...

I bought some claritin today, stuff is expensive $1 a pill for generic. We'll see if it works.

the nettie pot thing seems like it would work better for when you're really stuffed up. I can breath fine it's the annoying back of the throat tickle thing I've got going on that's driving me mad.

Nasal rinses are really only preventative, or therapeutic if one can actually have fluids pass through one's nose. NeilMed makes a squeeze bottle kit that is essentially the same thing. Even has a sterile salt formulation one dissolves in distilled water.

Great for those times when one first notices problems starting, or if one has a really dusty environment. Nettie pots are used a lot by Bedouin, and other desert dwellers.
