All this talk has intrigued me. Does anyone know what the lowest price I could expect to pay on a decent 29 would be?

Karate Monkey frame and fork retails for $450. Anybody know how much Gary Fisher's cost?

Spend what you have, value is okay for any offering. For 2003, the cheapest Fisher was the X-Caliber at $949 I believe. In 2004 they'll have fewer hardtails on offer, but you could also buy a beautiful SuperCal frame and start building.
In Europe, it starts at €599 for the Alivio/Deore equipped Nishiki TR-29.
Get the Karate Monkey to the ultimate low-mid speed performance, the Fisher for fast trails and bombing down descends where you'd normally want a fully sussy. It's just a few mm in the toptube, a different frame material, and a bit of headangle differnce, otherwise they're both super handling frames.
I know, I own both. The KM is fast, already without gears, the fastest thing I know for singletrack. Weight is huge, though irrelevant due to it's performance, and that means a lot, coming from the weightweenie me!
