I am getting one soon as well. Getting rid of this G**D**M Windows based, updating all the time, piece. I am actually trading my mother our old Subaru and this desk top which I am using right now for the MiniMac. Getting pimped out with the 2G of memory, 160G hard drive, wireless keyboard and mouse, and with the application to run Word and Excel on it (unfortunately, we have a ton of stuff in these formats, so we'll need it). We are going to run it off of our 32" flatscreen, so if we want to rent movies from iTunes or Netflix in the download capacity, boom...right there. If you read the reviews of the Mini, the people that bought it are trying to use it to make movies or other more complex things and it is a little overwhelming for it. But, if you use your computer for organizing pictures, music, watch an occasional movie, write a report once and a while, and bitch at each other on a forum, I think it will be perfect.

Just as soon as this G4 iBook dies. To date it's been thrown across a room (once), dropped (several times), and through Katrina (and two lesser storms); 4.5 years and counting, the f'n thing refuses to croak. Turns out that I don't value the portability as much as I once did, and would rather just have a bigger screen and better keyboard. Besides, the mini's form factor makes a better projectile.

Seriously though, get the damn mini already, you'll be glad. If nothing else, the quality of most Apple hardware is noticably better/tougher/more ergonomic. And cooler loooking. The only real reason to ever buy a new one is the machines sort of fall off the free upgrade gravytrain after about 4 years. If you're tough on hardware, consider Applecare too. Yeah, it's expensive but if you even think you might need it, you probably do.

They're alright, but for a 9mm, I'd much prefer the
HK MP5.

I love Macs but there are a few things that you should consider before jumping at a Mac Mini. This is from my experience with my Mini, was a backup now a front line machine:

Get a Superdrive. The upgrade cost would be comparable to a good quality DVD burner but it'll be more cleanly integrated.

If you like the Mini for its compact design, not only get the Superdrive but get either as big a harddrive as Apple offers or get an Elephant drive.

The Intel based processors don't support OS Classic. So you're SOL if you have archival applications or files that run off of those old applications. All of my vintage advertising design that I've archived can't be opened because it was created on PageMaker.

And finally, just because it's small that doesn't mean it won't take up a lot of space. Here's the back end of mine with monitor, speakers, printer, DSL modem, external harddrive and DVD burner attached. And this after I've cleaned up all the wiring.

Thanks for the advice Zinger. Got it tonight and I'm using it as I type. It's nice to use a computer and not having to hear it cough up phleghm. I wish a had known that I needed a keyboard and mouse that connected via USB, but my wife was happy that I had to go to bestbuy and get them. Slick shit! What do I do with all the space on the desk?
It just does--

AM,

Is this your first shot at a Mac? Are you running the Parallels software or did you just chuck it all? Did you buy it from that Best Buy or direct from Apple? Enquiring minds want to know.

I'm still trying to talk my dad into getting the Mac. He has to see something in person before buying and the Best Buy option is a real solution if he can actually see how intuitive they are first hand.

Yes, first shot. No Parallels I'm just done with MicroSoft. I have no need for it, at least at home.
I bought it from the Apple store online. Apparently you can ONLY buy the Mini online (both the Applestore and Best Buy offer them online) However I had to run to BestBuy tonight and get the USB mouse and keyboard (49.99 ea and worth it) So far I'm impressed, you just have to break a few old habits and learn a few new ones--The OS is amazing!

Why does every thing online look like crap on a PC and beautiful on the mac? I use a PC 6am to 5pm and the online experience here on the mac is a warm mess better. Also, DashBoard is a great tool.
Thanks for the nudge Zinger

I have a macbook pro at home and an iMac at school (I'm a grade school teacher). The kids do some extremely cool stuff with it, creating comic books, recording songs and ads with garage band, taking crazy pictures with photo booth etc. It's a very fun machine.
The dashboard is great. At one point I went a little crazy and had like 20 widgits on it though. The Simpsons quote generator is my favorite.

I switched a year ago. I LOVE 10.5. Spaces rocks my world at work - email, net, word, excel all open at once, and not in the way of each other. Windows scmindows.

My Mini Mac came in while I was in AZ at my grandfather's funeral. I just got 'er set up today and first impressions are SWEET! I have it hooked up to my home entertainment system, attached to the 32" LCD HDTV, which goes through the surround system. Should be sweet for downloading movies and listening to iTunes. I will be eventually buying the 1 terabyte hard drive that Apple offers, which works on their "Time Machine", so I can back up my stuff wirelessly and it also works as a wireless router.
