Just got off the phone with the local chapter. I have been toying witht he idea of severing a lot off my suburban property since i bought it last summer and due to its odd shape and our crazy setback rules, it is not worth what you would figure a 180x135' pie shaped lot would be. All it is to me right now is more grass to mow, so i thought about seeing if HfH would be interested. They are and looks like we may be able to move forward on it.
So what do you think of HfH as opposed to plain ol' gov't owned subsidized housing? i really like the concept, the sweat equity, the fact that a family pays it forward, works 500 hrs at least then gets something that is theirs, so they truly care about it.
my girls are soon to be 10 and 13 and i thought seeing the process up close now could teach them more about 'neighbour helping neighbour' than anything else we could do.
anyone else here had experience or supplied any 'sweat equity'?

I did photographology for a build...it was a HELL of a lot of fun. everyone enjoyed themselves, and the family was insanely grateful, tears and all. I say do it.

Habitat is a good program. Too bad our local group has a crazy woman high up that thinks she knows what she is doing.

My personal experience with Habitat has been exceptional. The concept has been proven sound and effective. In my case the working environment was very productive, enlightening, encouraging, and just plain fun. Habitat is the kind of thing that can help restore your faith in humanity (no pun intended).

thanks for the feedback. the more i think about it the more certain i get about it. I live in one of those quiet towns that became a bedroom community, losing part of its soul in the process - hopefully this will start to pull it back.
Also, what better neighbours can you have than someone who has built it with their own hands?
