I was on a super nice mountain bike ride over the weekend. I was coming down the Pilot Rock trail and was trying to clean the last rock tech section near the bottom, got all the way to the end and had to dab. and dab I did, fairly hard. It hurt, but it wasn't like broken bone hurt so I kept on pedaling, the adrenalin kept the pain away I guess as I did another 12 miles or so without notice. That night out of no where my foot starts throbbing enough to get me worried that I may have broken it. I scoffed and put some ice on it, popped some Ibuprofen and called it a day. The next day it was really sore and I was limping around, still I rode to work and by mid day had forgotten about it.
Well that's been the pattern, hurts like hell in the AM, and at night but when I'm using it it gets warmed up and I forget about it usually. What do you think? It's not bruised, it's not swollen, it just hurts mostly in the morning when it's stiff. Lots of people telling me it's probably not broken if I can walk on it, but I'm not so sure. I know the only way to know is with an XRay..
ah well, I really hope it's just a bruised bone, or sprain. What is it, 6 weeks off the bike, maybe 10 weeks off the dirt? Oh, and there's the whole I have no health insurance thing too!
just venting... one thing after an another!

My "liberal-ness" raises it head...
Having just seen "Sicko" the other day, this post kind of upsets me.
Not sure what the remedy for a broken foot is, usually a cast of some type...but the reason you won't check it out is lack of health insurance. It is real sad to see. The United States should be a world leader in health care, not making it impossible or intimidating.

Sorry about your foot. Even sorrier that you don't have health insurance. I'm not sure that I would ride without it. I had 15 stitches sewn in my face after a bike crash last year and even with a good corporate health plan I was out about $350. I had to wait four hours in the ER because so many uninsured folks were there with routine illnesses that should have been handled by a community clinic.
A national health plan sounds good, but considering how the government has handled Iraq and the mortgage mess, I'm not so sure I want those idiots messing with my medical care. What's the solution?

Go to the emergency room. Show the nice mans your owie. He will fix it for you. We will pay your bill. If/when we get "free" health care, the nature of the transaction will be essentially the same.
Fatass Moore and his "documentaries" shape your world view, mims? Now THAT is truly upsetting. As an educator, I'd expect you to have afew more smarts.
And the United States of America IS a world leader in health care. Or are the seriously ill now going to Venezuala when the doctors in their own countries run out of ideas? I must start paying closer attention.

I didn't want to start a debate about subsidized health care, nor do I want people to feel bad for me. I'm just venting - I agree that riding w/o health insurance is a bad idea but it's what I've got going on now. You better believe I'll be walking the tech sections for a lot longer now.
Come Monday I'll go to the clinic where they have a sliding pay scale based on your income. I won't get a freebie but I hope that they'll help me out somehow.
I don't make squat and I get taxed heavily, (just like we all do), but when you're pushing two pennies together and living in debt every dollar counts. So am I supposed to feel bad about finally taking advantage of some gov't assistance? meanwhile the crack head family w/ 7 kids gets a free ride - yeah at least I'm working everyday and I've never had an unwanted baby. but what do you get for that? not much.
Subsidized health care, not sure that's the answer but something does have to change.

I was in a weird mood yesterday afternoon...sorry about that. I didn't want to start a debate either.
I once crashed on a section of rock where it was the last technical piece before hitting smooth dirt roads and pavement. Less than 100 meters to go and I endoed. I probably broke my hand, and at least one rib, but even with health insurance I never went to a doctor. I just dealt with it.
My hand hurt for about 6 months, especially when I would shake someone's hand. It eventually healed. My rib(s) was all lumpy and it hurt when I breathed hard or laughed. It eventually healed too.
You'll probably be okay.

The USA is a world leader in healthcare, but only if you can afford it.
I wonder how much the surgery for my diabetic proliferative retinopathy would have cost if I had to pay for it...I'm quite thankful I live where I do right now. I can't get medical insurance because I'm a diabetic.
I broke a rib a few years back. Knowing they can't do anything about it I didn't go to the doc either. It's fine now. A foot'll suck, it's so easy to smash into things...

You go to the emergency room and don't have money-everyone pays. You have "free" health care-everyone pays. Damned if I see the difference between the two.
And yeah, if you've got the money you can buy just about anything you want. That's just the way life works. If you don't like it, don't bitch about what the other guy has. Get off your ass and get a job. Maybe I've just been supporting myself and my family for so long that I naturally assumed that's how it's supposed to be.

Where's it hurt? I whacked mine (and squished it into an overtightened Sidi) frequently enough that I get a painful spot (neuropathy) behind the 4th toe (next to littlest) about every morning, and like you, it goes away throughout the day.

what about the people that are just starting out in life, have a job, but not enough experience to make the 30 bazillion dollars per hour like old folks like you? and who also can't get insurance? you'd say to f'n bad to them too?
also emergency rooms won't treat retinopathy. blindness isn't life threatening, but I'd sure rather not have it.

Life aint fair. It will be much less so if the government tries to fix it.

Ignore Dave's thread jack...sounds like a soft tissue injury internally. Could be inflamation in a number of connective tissues. Tendons can "bruise" without actually showing a visual clue externally.
You do not hope it's a bruised bone. That would actaully take longer to heal regardless of treatment/no treatment.

Scuse the f*ck out of me, but it was mims who opened the "free health care" can of worms. Get snotty with him, why don't you.

Ok, that's good to know. I'm not hoping for a bruised bone then... I dunno. The last two days it's been bad, I've got the w/e off and if it feels like this on monday w/ 2 days rest I'll go get it checked out. ugh.

OK, Mims was an ass for starting this. Happy? At least he apologized for mentioning it.
He's also right. It's an abomination that the US has no proper plan for paying health care providers for those with no private health insurance. I don't like the current arrangement either...allowing for the institution providing the care to "write off" costs.
I feel that this is the country that can take good ideas that have flaws and make them better. Remember, employers would not provide some form of health care if they didn't have to because of pressure from market forces (employee demands through benefit packages). We'd all be out in the cold if they had that option.
Sorry for being sucked into this bog. See why I stay away from Politics Forum?
Plume, keep us posted. Feet are complicated structures. This could be a lot of things, or something as simple as a twist.

No, you were an ass for picking a fight over it. And I will be pleased to accept your apology.
This is not France or some shit. Nor do most of us want it to be. Our government already taxes us plenty and doesn't have the money for current social programs. Where's the money going to come from?
Mark my words-If five-star General and three-time Medal of Honor recipient Hilary Rodham "I singlehandedly stormed the beaches of Bosnia" Clinton manages to worm her way into the Oval Office, the enormity of her situation will cause her campaign promises to become a rapidly fading memory, at least in her on pathological liar's mind. In fact, if questioned on the matter, and after carefully viewing video recordings of her campaign promises, she will look a person dead in the eye and tell them, "I never said that".

What was that you were saying about other people going off topic?:rolleyes::D

My foot is feeling much better. I think it's a serious sprain, I've been putting weight on it and hasn't been bothering me as much. I even did a short road ride yesterday and it was fine. Soaked it when I got home though. I'll stay off the dirt until it feels 100%
I wish I had something to add to the discussion about health care, but all I can say is that our system doesn't work. Even when I had health insurance, it wasn't the best and I'd still avoid going to the doctors when ever possible.

Screw you, and I did not pick a fight over this yet. I only accused you of thread jacking and went on to contribute to the original topic.
Admittedly I type badly and meant to write stating this not starting this in my post directed at you. The remainder was an off-topic rant. It happens to the worst of us.
Sometimes you are very difficult to tolerate. I'm ending my interaction with this thread.
Plume, glad to hear that it seems to be on the mend.
