harddrive space full or nearly full? I know I can get a few gigs of temp space used when I've got a few large photos open in PS and the undo tree is long...

Budgmans,
I don't run a the full Photoshop, just the "lite" version (PS Elements), so I'm probably not the best person to ask.
My Ibook is incredibly stable *touch wood* but I can sense it straining a bit when I'm messing with a lot of images at once.
As a general list of things, off the top of my head:
Make sure you "check for updates" on PhotoShop and the Mac OS, to make sure you are at least up to date there.
Next time you are planning on a massive PS session, first quit all other programs (if you don't need to have them running). That may free up some memory.
P.S. the gift sub I bought for you started with #134. I've got a feeling it'll take a while for it make it to your postal box in the land of Oz. But hold off buying one at the newsstand, help is on the way.

I say:
Nah, massive external harddrives are very affordable (here in the USA), and a great idea for backing up internal HD against crash or other failure.

I think you need to max out your ram. 512 is not alot and that is probably why you are freezing up. Dont know how much ram your iMac will hold.

Like jerman said, 512 ain't nothin' for your Russosterpieces... PS uses a bunch (30-50MB) just to run w/o any files open. Max that crap out then also make sure you itch your scratch disk.
ps: DON'T GO TO THE DARK SIDE!...

54 G is a lot of free space. I doubt that's the issue.

03-28-2008, 06:31 PM
whoops, I didn't see 54G as beeing the free portion, sorry. Yeah, thats probably not the problem, unless macs use swap partitions and the swap partition is full (it is a bsd derivitive), but that's all of my current mac knowlege right there. I'll pick one up one day.

Macs aren't as RAM intensive as PCs but you'll still do better with as much memory as you can fit. This is especially true when running Photoshop.
Check out http://lowendmac.com/imacs/index.shtml for how much your machine can take.

pretty much. low quality capacitors blowing after a few years is moderately common on computers. That means a main board replacement. The cost of a main board from apple means it's probably not worth it.

would that be the same for a PC if it shit a main board?
wondering if i should move to the PC side for serviceability.

wondering if i should move to the PC side for serviceability. With a PC the Microsoft OS can drive you mad as a hatter, especially if you get stuck with Vista. You need Windows XP Pro if you want a fairly bullet proof PC OS. And Leopard still runs circles around it for usability and resource use.

yeah it's the same. it's even worse actually because now you have to wade through the mass of shoddy motherboards that they sell for cheap. Some are good, alot are shit. You'll probably be happier with a mac since you already have one.
And almost none of the big retail pc computer sellers sell a computer with any quality components inside in any kind of a reasonable price range. You're screwed in the PC market unless you want to build your own and do a whole ton of component research.

Ok, we're a Mac family and have been for 20 years. But, all fanatacism aside, why is everyone so down on Vista?
I picked-up a Vista laptop for work back in January, and it's been totally fine - no network issues, domestic & int'l travel, citrix web connections, etc. IMHO it's the best Windoz version to date. Maybe it's the little differences (i.e. change) that upsets the PC-users' world?

it's the statistics. if only a few people had trouble, we could say it was their particular configuration or something. however more people have trouble than not. you just got lucky.
