Have I posted this one yet? I can’t remember.
Since people are posting their Surly cross/touring/road bikes…

This is my Bridgestone RB-2, circa 1992, 56 cm.

The back story…

I bought this bike new, out of the box. It was a replacement for a bike I had just sold; a Specialized Allez Epic (early CF technology). We had seen 2 Allez Epics fail during the Tour of the Gila, so I decided to sell mine. I wanted a steel frame and the Bridgestone fit the bill.

Back then, Bridgestone was the hip company in the industry. Grant Peterson was/is a real maverick in the industry and pretty much went against the grain of the emerging trends.

I opted for the RB-2 because it was affordable at around $460 vs. the RB-1 was about $800 (if I remember correctly).

Made in Japan, the RB-2 had identical geometry to the championship winning RB-1. It also has butted Ishiwata tubing (but seamed vs. the RB-1’s seamless tubing). It rides like silk. Love the ride quality…Peterson’s bikes have ample tire clearance. I can fit a 32c tire on the RB if I wish. Peterson also put a mix group of components to keep the price down.

Though heavy and obsolete by today’s measure (about 23 or 24 lbs.), I might be dropped, but I don’t mind. This bike is still my only road bike and it rides like a dream; smooth and agile.

I'd like to find an RB-1.
How do you like that steel fork? Skinny and elegant!

My buddy scored (free) an RB-1 from his father in law that had ridden the bike for like 10 miles. Red 1992. Real sweet ride.

I love older, steel road bikes. If you look on ebay there are plenty to look at and dream about but generally they do get bid up pretty high.

Its hanging in the garage at my mom's rental house (my grandmother lives there). I pull it out in the summer. Been thinking of bringing it down to VE, but I'd kind of like to keep it where it is. It is a nice bike. Rides like a dream.

Here's Ribby, my '92 RB-1. She was red when I bought her new in '92. Only the frame, fork and brake calipers are original after a major rebuild in 2000. Great bike for century rides (or most anything else). :)
