Have I posted this one yet? I can’t remember.
Since people are posting their Surly cross/touring/road bikes…
This is my Bridgestone RB-2, circa 1992, 56 cm.
The back story…
I bought this bike new, out of the box. It was a replacement for a bike I had just sold; a Specialized Allez Epic (early CF technology). We had seen 2 Allez Epics fail during the Tour of the Gila, so I decided to sell mine. I wanted a steel frame and the Bridgestone fit the bill.
Back then, Bridgestone was the hip company in the industry. Grant Peterson was/is a real maverick in the industry and pretty much went against the grain of the emerging trends.
I opted for the RB-2 because it was affordable at around $460 vs. the RB-1 was about $800 (if I remember correctly).
Made in Japan, the RB-2 had identical geometry to the championship winning RB-1. It also has butted Ishiwata tubing (but seamed vs. the RB-1’s seamless tubing). It rides like silk. Love the ride quality…Peterson’s bikes have ample tire clearance. I can fit a 32c tire on the RB if I wish. Peterson also put a mix group of components to keep the price down.
Though heavy and obsolete by today’s measure (about 23 or 24 lbs.), I might be dropped, but I don’t mind. This bike is still my only road bike and it rides like a dream; smooth and agile.
