What is it with people throwing trash out of thier car windows? What is so stinkin' tough about thowing it in THE GARBAGE! Get real folks. We are higher up the food chain that that. Well, MOST of us, anyway.

whats the feeling about punctured inner tubes tied to trees? There was a bit of a fad for doing this a while back where I ride and I can't decide... Littering or adding to the general atmosphere of the trail?

Why would you want to tie an old innertube to a tree? This is just going to give mountain bikers a bad name in your area as leaving garbage in the woods. Plus, you can patch them...I've got innertubes with 15+ patches on them. Gotta get your money's worth out of them, you know?
Leave no trace. If you brought it into the woods, take it out. In fact, take more out of the woods than you brought it. See some trash? Pick it up. See some innertubes around trees? Take them home and patch them...free innertubes. The extra weight isn't going to make one bit of difference...

Every Sunday morning our group heads out to the trails each with a garbage bag. We bring out as much as we can. With backpacks and Camelbaks now, it is simple to strap the bag in place and still be able to rip around without worrying about the weight or being unstable on the bike. if everyone did the same, we would have some gorgeous woods.
And please, tell me where you're leaving your tubes and I'll come get them!!

I'm proud to say I've never actually tied a tube to a tree myself, just seen it done before. I too have tubes with patches all over them.
There's something quite soothing about accumulating a few punctured tubes and then sitting down and mending them all at once. I'd guess it's similar to the attraction of knitting for grannies...

My policy; never throw a tube away until it meets one of certain criteria.
1) Hole really close to previous patch.
2) Way too many patches already (like 10)
3) Valve stem broke off
4) Totally slashed
5) More than like, 5 holes at one time.
It's very theraputic to sit around and patch 10 or 20 tubes at one time.
Don't forget to test them before carrying them on a ride.

From what I've seen the mtn bikers out here seem to be pretty clean. If there is any litter on the trails it is usually from hunters, and I have never seen an inner tube tied to a tree.

We have the same problem with put used tires on trees and the ever ready ORANGE SURVEY SPRAY PAINT! What idiots.......stay on the trail.....where ever it will take you......you will end up somwhere......and don't worry about it. But Don't Littler the Trail with Unessesary Litter!

im very glad to find a forum to vent but all this talk of litter and trail abusing is preaching to the choir. i have noticed that those i mountain bike with share a unique careful quality in concern to our planet, let alone our trails and roadways and seem eager to refine, reclaim and keep clean our area. i become physically ill and quite close to violent outbursts upon seeing trash jettisoned from a car window like we were in deep space unloading space trash. i wish sometimes for the jackass in the pickup truck to unwittingly throw a butt into my open car window(ac is for weaklings) just so i can get out of my vehicle and grind it into his face(totally antisocial behavior i know, i need help) but really we as a sub group are kinder and more concerned with these issues, i dont know why we are but we are. i do so appreciate the forum nonetheless. tb

Anyone who thinks a tube tied to a tree is cool, man i don't know where to start. I know, with the hollow-days approching. why don't you adorn your tree with'em, hey how about a few old tires on the coffee table!? Leave NO trace is self explanatory, but isent it about respect? I get pissed even when I see used kleenex on the trail! biodegradeable or not, who want's to see a hikers used snot rag on the trail?! Mother Nature's getting pissed-off!

Rained out rides become peaceful tube patching sessions.
Answering the original post, this really pisses me off too. When I was living in MN, I used to carry a carton of eggs in my car. If someone threw trash out of their window, I threw an egg at their car.
Since I can't afford to go to jail these days, I just get really pissed off at the offender.
Tubes in trees: Dumb idea. Always has been, always will be.
Gu packs, racing etc: Same damn thing: Pack out what you brought in. I've never understood why people leave crap on the trails.

I will occasionally leave one of those little round metal things from a presta valve or a piece of chain link deliberately for future archiologists to wonder over :o

some of these people today are so lazy, they have to go on a low carb diet. Who started that hanging inner tubes on a tree anyway... back in '02? I was at Telluride CO for a race this past july. Up at Alta Lakes was a tube on a tree. Was not there before the race. Only were a few cars up there.

Too late, I was thinking a variation of the same thing: when I am in our local trails and come across a Gu packet, I occasionally come ungued. Normally, our trail trash is beer cans or cigarettes, and neither are from cyclists, but only cyclists use Gu.
It sure makes hiking along with a Access Committee to survey trails more fun when there's "bike trash" on the trail.
