Mavic X717 disc are the most popular light XC rims, not that pricey (especially compared to a King hub), about $70 each. You can still find some X317's around for cheap (same rim different decals). The Sun Ringle DS-1 are cheaper at $35-ish and only 5gms heavier.

I just got a set of wheels built with Wilderness Trail Bikes (WTB) Dual Duty rims. I've had real good luck with the WTB LaserBeams, so I thought I'd give these a shot. They seem reasonably light. Here's a review I found (http://www.mountainzone.com/gear/product-review.asp?rid=1123)about the whole wheelset. Mine were custom built with XT hubs instead of the WTB hubs.
