OK, so there is this local loop around the airport that is a good "Trails too wet" or close to work option for the road bike. This time last year I already had some 300+ miles under my belt and that was after a wreck that had me off the bike for about a month. To compare, this year sucks....I got less then 200 miles logged:mad::mad::mad:

So what happens today? I did this loop, 10.8 miles, with just 1 minute over my best time last year! 38 minutes and change vs 37. My average was 16.7 MPH What the heck is that about?

Oh yeah, yesterday...39 minutes and that was with a headwind for about a 1/4 of the ride!

I'm no training expert, I just ride so this opinion is not based on science:). Maybe the loop is such that your fitness or mileage doesn't matter that much to your performance. Or, maybe you're nice and fresh from the less mileage.

Or, your computer's messed up.:D

I guess what I'm saying is "Beats me".

that sort of performance is going around kd...i'm in the same boat thanks to a real live winter.

while i wont discredit the holy trinity of base miles, fitness and fuel (errr whatever the kids are listening to these days) you should not discredit your own raw energy/excitement for being riding at all...its pretty potent...and if iz impotent, iz gonna look impotent!

Fitness is cumulative.

I'm faster than I was at this time last year because last year's time riding will last a long time toward this year.

Then how come the older I get, the faster I was?

As the saying goes:"I'm as good once as I ever once was." :D

well, im not in anywhere near as good of shape as i was this time last year. so far ive done nothing except a few rides, last year i was in the gym 3-4 times a week for an hour each time lifting and doing 30min total sprints for race season training, plus base miles.

even though i now have 2 free gyms to use at our firestations. im a slacker. has this very long winter affected everyone else greatly too?

The metric went fine, great weather and the route was not what I expected. Since this is promoted as a Family ride, I expected nothing but flat and rollers but Nooooo. Rollers and huffers and very little flat!

And today, we're fine so I'm gonna stick to Nog's and Phlat's theory...Cumulative fitness and feeling good! Legs are good, knees are great and just a little stiff in the shoulders where I expected it because of a slip on the ice couple months back. :rolleyes:Hmmm, maybe we should lobby Ms Brooks to change the name of this board from "Fitness" to "How are you NOT getting old?" :p
