Yesterday I was 7 miles into a rocky technical 21 mile loop, when I heard two loud snaps come from my rear wheel. You all know that sound. A stick had went into the spokes and caught at the seatstays. Stopped to check it out, the spokes (14ga) didn't break, two nipples (brass) had snapped off at the ferrule. There was no damage to the rim, but it did have a hop in it. At this point I starting an 8 mile section full of rock gardens with no turn around. At the far end I would be 10 miles from my car, solo. I decided to keep going.
The rest of the ride went well, and the wheel was no farther out at the end than when it happened. At home, replaced the nipples and trued the wheel. Good as new. Looking inside the rim there is a rib running down the center connecting all the spoke holes which saved the ferrules from pulling out, which would have ruined the rim.
IMO this is a good strong rim. It came stock on my Haro Mary 29 SS.

I've had some of the original WTB Laserbeams (rim brake version) on my Merlin since 2000. I only recently replaced the rear wheel for the ENO hub built wheel.
In the 9 years of running the Laserbeams, I've never had to true the wheels. The rear even has a nice rock ding from riding with too low of pressure. No problem!
They are bomber!

the speeddisc 700c was inexpensive and plenty adequate, used them for years...disposable but effective.
little over a year ago wtb started shipping the laserdisc trail version in its place (to my initial chagrin) what a difference the i-beam and wider profile make...bullet proof for sure.
what is surprising is that a robot made wheel survived that...not many would.

I have a pair of these rims on my DiSSent, and I am impressed with them. I run low pressure, and my local trail is essentially one big root garden, and these rims haven't complained one bit. Now, this is the first year of use, but so far, so good.

Like Mimsy said "bomber". I'm running Nevegals @24 PSI w/tubes. What about you Lee?
I have these on my Mary, switched the spokes to 15 guage and also run weirwolfs at 25-30psi.I'm 220lbs and so far 6 months trouble free.

I really, really push my luck with tire pressure sometimes. There is a lot of clay out here too, so I need my tires to shed that crap or I spend more time sliding off the trail than anything else. Maybe 20 front, 25 rear, tops. At Summer Solstice I put 25 front, 30 rear, and it felt like A LOT more pressure than I usually run. Like I said before though, the rims take it without complaint.
