View Full Version : Ow! My poor taint!

Rode about 18 miles of really technical single-track yesterday.
I ride a hard-tail and my taint is in bad shape!
I'm not sure which to blame more-- my lame Performance shorts, my saddle, or the rough terrain. :)
Any of you XC riders ever try "Chamois Butt'r" or similar to prevent "taint chafe"?
Cheers!

Back in the day when chamois was real leather I would use Noxzema. With modern materials I ride dry. I actually find rigid ss easier on my region because I'm standing up 75% of the time. Maybe my ass has turned to leather after a lifetime of riding.

Chamois Butt'r can reduce the rub a dub dub and help with saddle sores.

Chamois Butt'r pre-ride, Dr Smith's diaper ointment post-ride. Seriously. :)

Only a rider with kids would have tried that...

Desitin® works, too, but it sticks to you like tub and tile caulk. I've found the Dr Smiths to be less greasy and to have overnight healing properties to get you back in the saddle faster.

Great tip, phlat...
I've got some diaper ointment already! I'm sure the kid won't mind if I use some! :)

Bag Balm will heal you up. And I can't overemphasize the importance of good hygene, both pre and post ride. Vaseline helps too. It's hypo-allergenic.
Best treatment: Wash the affected area thoroughly. Apply Bag Balm. Usually will heal up by the next day. Next day, apply Vaseline before riding.
How's your setup? A good fit is crucial to comfort. Volumes have been written on the subject; I just mention it in hope of covering all bases.
Some folks would ride nothing but a Brooks. Some hate them. But if you have tenderness issues it's something you might want to look into.

Saddle fit is really important, make sure the nose of the seat isn't tipped up, and make sure your weight is back on your sit bones and not forward on the nose of the seat, you may have the seat too far back.

Good topic for me today, just finished a sub-48 hour 400 mile ride, mostly pavement, a bit of limestone trail thrown in for extra fun once the thunderstorms hit.
I've been trying to avoid petrolum based products recently, I've had plenty of exposure to this stuff already, don;t want any long term problems.
That said, I used a bit of Chamois Butt'r and it works.
I also used some Brave Soldier Friction Zone. It is good stuff, seems to have prevented a few slightly chaffed areas from blowing up into full on saddle sores. I rode in to work today and really can't believe my rear is not in worse shape.

ps- don't really put icy-hot down there. i figure you knew i was joking, but i'd feel bad if you actually tried it.
This might have been mentioned before but, be sure to get out of your shorts asap after riding. No driving home in your plum smugglers. The rash one can develop is decidedly not fun. Don't ask how I know :o

That would explain all the pictures of Budgie with his shorts down around his ankles, he's airing out his taint. :D

Also the type of saddle may make a difference. Find one that fits your sit bones.
Also shorts. I had a nice pair of Pearl Izumis shorts ($80 nice) that wore out. Thrifty and cheap me thinks, "hey, I paid big bucks for these, they should last more than a season or two." Every time I rode with them, I'd get chafed. Finally, I got a clue, retired them and now haven't any problems.
The shorts I ride in now are of the $35 variety. Not quite as slick, but work just as well in my opinion and will wear-out just the same.

Some riders wash the area with rubbing alcohol, it stings but it works. Sort of like those old cowboy movies where they would pour whiskey on a bullet wound.

Anyone tried Body Glide? I buddy of mine bought some but hasn't used it yet so we're both wondering if it really works. Kinda like stick deodorant. Hmmmmm, Body Glide, wonder if, nah better not go there.:o Guess he'll find out this week when he and his wife hit the rail trail at Cumberland, MD and ride 40 miles each way.
