:o stupid question but need to know, when you ride do you wear underpants under your padded lycra shorts, if you wear pants which do you recommend, I ask this because everytime I go for a ride for over an hour i get sore down there and it feels as if my arse hairs are being ripped out:eek: Thankyou if you reply to this embarassing question.

Pants under your shorts? No. Camois against your bits is the best place for it. And get some @rse Lard (if you have kids it's the stuff you put on your kid's @rse for nappy rash) it's the biz.

Plus, glad to see the correct use of the word Pants. The other correct use, of course, being "that's pants, that is":p

Right. No underwear under padded bike shorts. The idea is to eliminate seams and anything else getting between your butt and your saddle.

well i wear baggies (hoss ponderosa's) ... and i always wear stuff under em... (hanes! hah ... those stupid boxer/brief things) ...

never ran into an issue about seams and such causing pain ... it is solid material where my butt hits the seat ...

/shrugs ... never said i did things the way others do it.

If it works for you fine. But bike shorts with a built in chamois are designed to be worn without undergarments.
Comfort is one reason. But also bike shorts will transfer moisture away from your body. Your hanes will hold sweat next to your body, which can (in some cases) lead to saddle sores or other issues. Try going commando with your bike shorts, you might like it!

Of course baggy shorts that dont have a built in chamois should be worn with under garments. The best are bike specific or sport specific and made of wicking fabric. I have some cannondale bike under shorts which are padded (built in chamois) designed to wear under un padded bike shorts or regular shorts. I wear them with jean shorts when I want to look more casual and fit in with non bikers.

 I don't want to think about how wet those things are when you're done with 'em... And doubling your laundry load, voluntarily? I'd break that habbit quick.

Unless you are dead set on wearing padded lycra, you should check out a pair of Fox Mid Rangers. They have a built in padded chamois and are really comfortable. plus you don't have on skin tight pants.:D

Oh yeah, you don't need to wear anything under them. ;)

How invigorating to imagine all the cyclists going commando. I just started training to go long distance and hated cycling pants because the padding looks so gross like you took a dump in your pants, camel toe in the front and back. I got a skort but I feel really "frilly" when I use it. The idea was to be able to appear in public, like a cafe after a bike ride.

Now I think I prefer the traditional cycling pants over the skort because it's less flapping around and I have joined the club of fellow commando lycra freaks.

when I wear a skirt people round here look at me funny, especially in pubs after a ride so I tend to wear baggy shorts over roadie lycra cycle shorts / bib. It's the most comfortable combo that i've found that doesn't leave me walking into a pub looking like a budgie smuggler who just pooped himself ;)

My favorite mtb setup is generic padded cycling liners under cutoff camo hunting pants. The pants are a light nylon type material that dries in minutes and has loads of pockets and a built in fabric belt. Got em on close out at dicks, $15. I get a lot of laughs and look like a turkey hunter on wheels. No problem at the pub. :D

No skivvies, but if you get some "irritation" during the long rides, rub some of this (http://www.udderbalm.com/products.html) into your chamois. Smooooth.
