well i guess, if you get technical. it isnt my first bike . it is the first bike that got me hooked on mountainbiking though .. before that it was bmx and freestyle in the 80's ...
and my first bike for that part was a salvation army frame that was rebuilt and knobby tires and different handlebars were put on ...
That will get the job done. My first "real" mountain bike was a 1986 GT. I don't have any photos of it. It did have a really sweet paint job; it was black, but the paint was made to look like it was all cracked, with white and grey primer underneath. Yellow lettering, bottle cages, clips & straps. Stem was painted to match the frame. Tight.
Probably weighed 30 lbs rigid. Got bad chain suck in the mud. But it got me hooked on mountain biking and here I am over 20 years later. :D

i remember those paintjobs ... i had an old kuwahara freestyle bike with a white frame that had neon colors splattered all over it ... dunno what happened to that bike .. (the rebuilt one i first had i gave to another kid after getting that one) ... i still have my torquer 2 freestyle bike ... may restore it one day ... but for some reason .. when i turned 15 .. cars took a higher priority over the bikes ... now i see my car as something to transport my bikes with hah!

So should I convert my Monocog to fixed or what?
Keeping the Faith (http://www.dirtragmag.com/print/article.php?ID=41)....
Quality stuff right there.
I don't really miss that first GT, but boy do I wish I had my first Stumpjumper. That was my second mountain bike, and my first real "performance" ride... full LX with rapidfire shifters, cantis, softride stem and bullhorn bars taped with some rubberized bartape. That stuff was pretty good. I think it was an Onza product.
If'n I still had it, I'da ENO'ed it into a single and would still be riding it today.

Funny you should mention that. I wrote that article eight years ago. Currently my "RockSteady" is singulated via an ENO eccentric hub.

I was wondering when you wrote that. No date on the article.
That's very cool that you kept the Rockhopper. I really wish I had that first Stumpy back in my garage. I may have to go hunting for one someday.

What? You don't have an encyclopedic memory of all things Dirt Rag? :D ;) Otherwise, you'd have to click the "Issue 77" link at the top to get to the publication date.
I'm sure there are old Stumpys out there. Keep yer eyes peeled.

good read, hadn't seen that before =) ... its kinda the reason i have held onto my torquer freestyle bike ... and likely the same reason i won't get rid of this bike .. even tho i am already gathering up peices to build a 29er ... (been MTB'in for less then 6 months and already got a bad case of parts aquizition disorder)

Here's a nice 1989... (http://cgi.ebay.com/1989-Specialized-Stumpjumper_W0QQitemZ190231814149QQihZ00 9QQcategoryZ159000QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ 1QQcmdZViewItem)
I think mine was a 1992 or 1993. It was the last year before they went to the Diacompe Aheadset. I remember because a guy I work with got the new model on pro-form right after I paid retail (sale, but still retail) for my last year's model with a threaded headset.
That '89 is pretty tempting though. It's even got semi-horziontal drops to make singlification that much easier...

I don't have any pictures of my first (Kuwahara) or second (CycleTech Nova) mountain bikes, but I have a pic of my 3rd mountain bike (1988 Mongoose IBOC Pro).

In 1992 I worked at a shop that carried Mongoose. We had an IBOC in with some allegedly super-sticky tires. I took it out into the lot behind the loading dock and did a little skidpad test on it.... laid it down, 'natch. I was pretty bloody and the seat cover was tore up, but at least I didn't get fired onna count of being stupid. :D

Wow, magenta/teal fade, schwing!
I messed a bit with singulating my RockHopper via the old semi-horizontal drops, but eventually decided to go ENO.

I wish I had my first mtn bike...a 1986 Trek 850 "Antelope". Nice bike with riser bars, 5-speed Suntour friction with top-mount shifters, Suntour PowerCam rear brake mounted on the chainstay, Diacomp cantilevers up front.
There is a picture of me on that bike hanging on the wall at Two Wheel Drive in Albuquerque...complete with a Vetta helmet.
Unfortunately that frame broke on the drive-side dropout.
My second bike was cool too. A Fisher ProCaliber (1988) with that triple color fade; yellow to red to black. It was the flashiest bike I've owned. The Prestige tubing was too delicate. It broke within a year. A one-season bike. It had 6 or 7-speed Shimano index shifting with top-mount shifters.
Third bike...Merlin (1990) (1993) (1996) Currently in SS configuration.

They compliment the gym socks rather nicely I thought.

My first mtn bike was 1987 Specialized Rockhopper. Still have it. I currently ride a 2007 Specialized Rockhopper Comp Disc. The old made a good first ride. I love the new one! I'll have to get pics of the two Rockhoppers showing the evolution of the bike. I'm all in favor of the 4" of front travel, 27 gears and disc brakes.
The '87 features bio pace chainrings, a rear U brake, a hite rite adjustable seat post binder and indexed rear gears 3x6=18 gears. I added an Avocet Gel saddle, Fat City handlebar and Deore XT bear trap pedals.
I have no pics of my first MTB either, or my second for that matter.
First was a 91 Giant Iguana, cro-mo frame and fork, suntour drivetrain, it mostly did apt-class duty, with only a couple dirt excursions. I resurrected it about 5 years ago and started riding, mostly in town. Then dropped the coin on a Specialized FSR XC prodisc, which was stolen off my patio about 9 months later. This (with my then proven love of singletrack, thankyou FSR XC!) opened the door for me to step up and buy my current ride, Stumpy expert.
The Giant was loaned to a fellow how turned out to be a crackhead, who says it was stolen. I (hindsight is 20/20) suspect pawned or traded..........

My first real mountainbike was a Nigel Dean Nevada.
The rodies amongst you may know Nigel Dean, a (brit?) road racer turned frame maker he jumped the bandwagon in the late 80s and started producing mountainbike frames. It was made with Reynolds 531 "Magnum" tubing, which afaik was Reynolds' attempt to jump the mtb bandwagon itself by making their standard tube set heavier . It ran a Suntour XC Pro drivetrain and weiged in at 30lbs ... fully rigid  not good for a 500 GBP (750 USD) bike even back then.
I loved it though and rode it until I moved to the other side of the pond for a year and bought my cannondale M800. Not needing the Nigel dean anymore, but not wanting to give it up, I gave it to my brother. It was in need of some maintenance so he took it to his LBS and asked them for a quote. I was out of the country at the time and when I returned I enquired after my prime steed. He told me that hadn't liked what they told him at the LBS (100 GBP to do the necessary, or something) so ... he JUST LEFT IT THERE.:mad::mad::mad:
I have not let my brother near any of my bikes since and although he probably forgot the incident years ago, I never will. I still have all the bikes that I have owned since then here's a pic of the cannondale that replaced the Dean, now running singlespeed and still sweet as it was back in 1990 even if the frame is all that remains.

I still have my first mountain bike, a StumpJumper I bought from a friend in 1991 or 1992, oh hell, lets just say sometime between 1991 and 1995. I don't know what year the bike was made, I can tell you that it is red and the rear brakes are mounted on the chain-stay. Its' been a singlespeed since 2000 or 2001, hell, sometime after Y2K. Still gets allot of use.
Edit to add: Did a little web-research - it appears to be a 1988.

My first MTB was a recreational Giant Yukon... 14" very much an off the rack set-up with very basic components.
Slowly recreational biking got a little bit serious, biking more technical trails, joined races and needed to upgraded parts... like rockshox SID forks... etc.
This month, i managed to replace all the parts, frames last to go, into a Hi-light titanium frame.
Old Parts:
selle italia flite saddle
Mavic crossride wheelset
shimano xt gearset
shimano spd pedals
rockshox sid word cup fork
Easton EA50 lowrise handlebars
Avid Juicy seven hydraulic brakes
New Parts:
hi-light Ti-frame 16"
Thomson seat post
hope seat post clamp
canecreek headset
kcnc stem

I don't know if this is the case with your fork, but my buddy had a Marzocchi that he ran without the brake bosses...it broke. They held the lower together.
