I've been using Amsoil Heavy Duty Metal Protector as a chain lube on both my mountain and road bike for several years with very good results. HDMP sprays on and is very easy to apply (keep it off your rims and brake discs). After about 20 minutes it sets up into a waxy film that doesn't pick up a lot of dirt or mud.
Chain life, shift quality, and retention before the chain needs relubing are all very good. It is also economical, a 16 oz. spray can lasts me two or three seasons and costs less than $10. Overall it is the best chain lube I've ever used. If you don't have a local dealer you can find it at www.amsoil.com.
