WooHoo, finally a forum with a spot dedicated to commuting!

Now that i've found it, what are you commuting on?

Here in the midwest fall rains are setting in and I've switched to my Giant XTC. I added a team sid fork for the lock out, it's a heck of lot more comfortable then my Speciallized Allez and handles better in wet leaves, however, I miss the speed.

I need to find something that has a good comprimise somewhere between the two.

I currently commute on my Giant NRS, but will soon have my Dean Cyclocross frame completed.

Here is what I commute on
http://www.personal.psu.edu/faculty/r/c/rcc105/mybike_parabola.htm
It is an early 90's Peformance Parabola, was a touring bike using extra long reach calipers. I love it, it can handle up to 40c w/o fenders and about 32 with the fenders I got on it now.

I was thinking of making it into a full on cyclocross bike but you know what, I love it as is too much so that idea is out. I am going to get canti mounts brazed on, the Dia Compe brakes are a little weak. Right now I have flat bars with bar ends on it.

well i WAS commuting on an old fuji road frame converted to a fixed, but that was before i crashed the hell out of it. now i'm cruising on my Bianchi C.U.S.S. which is enjoyable but the gearing is way too low. i'm spinning my ass out all the time. that's ok, this is only for a couple more months until i get my new fixie built up from www.circleacycles.com

Bright Yellow Redline Conquest Cyclocross bike. My wife makes fun of it because it has matching yellow rims.

I looked at a Bianchi cyclecross. The whole want vs. need equation comes up with my wife evertime I go look at it.

One of my problems besides the skinny tires on wet, littered pavement is that i'm recovering from a summer crash that dislocated my shoulder and broke my wrist. It's all healed but riding in the drops leaves me sore for days.

I also have a redline conquest, 91 I think, blue with smokey lines under the clear coat. Was a fun bike at the time, but man is it heavy.

I'm checking out the Speciallized Sirrus, looks like a nice comprimise with room for fenders in bad weather.

Thanks for the ideas,

JR

Plain Jane! Actually it is. Its a Schwinn CrissCross. These long discontinued rides ars made of lugged cro-moly, and they have awesome long top tubes! My rig is a 52cm seat tube by 58.5 top tube! Like a 29er, only before there was such a beast. Too bad it won't fit "the tire", but it will take up to a 40mm okay. Besides, you can usually find these so cheap at the used bike places(or rummage sales), that you can't go wrong. Got cantis, got steel fork, got rack and fender mounts too. Goes as fast as you want to. Check one out if you see one. Schwinn also made a "Crosscut" thats basically the same frameset. Only thing I don't like is that durned 26.4mm seatpost size!
Anyway, I got her built up with a 52x39 double, 7 speed casette, Drop bars, barend shifters, and old skool XT rear derailluer. Fenders too. Ride it in the snow, rain whatever...Hey! it was cheap.

both SS [ottawa is pretty damn flat so only seems logical]
first is my old miyata running a 46x18 and semi slicks. rigid aluminum, hot pink [late 80's frame] using the original XT derailleur as tensioner. this is my winter bike which refuses to die - thought last winter woulda killed it but washed the salt off in the spring and it still worked so sould be good for one more.
second is my fave - picked up a van dessell straight up last winter and with lots of modifications [riser XC bar instead of the stache bars, BMX cassette hub instead of a coaster, single front brake] it is super simple and supa fast. just swapped out the stock 44x16 gear [cog was shot and too tall for the cold weather] for a 44x18. still a hoot to ride and ugly enuff no one will steal it. i do some smooth single track on it some times but too and from woik is what this girl was made for.

I'm commuting on a Kona Explosiv 1x9 with a Project 2 fork. I just got a nice set of wheelhugger fenders that look much better than I expected and I'm working on getting some grocery bag panniers.

Just recently heard that Kona discontinued this bike. Too bad. Now I have a collector's item.

A few years ago I bought a Specialized Hardrock frame (super cheap!) and started building it with whatever used/abused/upgraded/almost worn out parts that I had laying around. Things change as parts break & wear out, but it's currently set up as a 1x7, with a rack in the rear, fenders, semislicks, and a nice wide bar. I put a non suspension corrected fork on it to tighten up the handling and drop the BB a bit. It isn't as fast as my roadie, but it's plenty fast for getting to work. I'm also building a workhorse cruiser with lotsa baskets for neighborhood shopping/hauling duty.

Gunnar Street Dog, fixed w/front brake for the times I have to stop without thinking. I have to send it off to spectrum powedercoating for that special paint jobbie, so I have to ride the new R-33 for a month or so.

WHen I am feeling frisky and the wheather is warm, I will ride my old Lotus road bike. But usually I stroke to work on a 12 year old DB Apex that has been beat and thrashed. I love that old bike. And when I decide to take the off road way to work, I ride the Rocky ETSX30.
