Why are some folks prone to vomiting after excessively punishing physical exertion?
I started submission grappling again after am 18 month hiatus. It’s painfully obvious that being in half decent riding shape is still miles away from being in shape for wrestling. My cardio isn’t too awful, but after every class I’m emptying my guts in the parking lot. Hydration and nutrition are not factors. The gym is pretty hot…
I realize as I get back the level of fitness, this’ll dissipate, but until then - Any suggestions on cause/cure?

Maybe you're throwing up the food or drink you've injested immediatly after your hard work out. If that's the case, try waiting a little while after your workout to start rehydrating or eating.
This might not be the reason for your yacking, but the only time it's happened to me after a hard workout is when I tried to eat or drink too soon. Hopefully it's that simple for you.
Where do you train in the burg?

in general, i chow down some easily digested carbs 2-3 hours prior to rolling, so there's nothing really in my gut save for water. i'm too busy spewing up post workout to eat anything.
i'm rolling at Mad Dog now.
adendum -i usally have the shakes pretty bad afterwards too. i reckon i've depleted my reserves -does low blood sugar cause nausea?

Absolutely. I have to watch my levels and always have some Hammer® gel on hand during strenuous activities to pick me up from the bonk. Shakes are the onset, nausea comes after that — though I haven't let it go that for for years now that I know how to manage my bloodsugar levels.
Good luck (Chuck... :p)

Hey... this sounds to me like adrenaline poisoning. Err... it isn't exactly poisoning, but secrete enough of the nasty stuff and you'll feel like you just drank 20 cups of coffee... If it is in your system still, it can easily give you the shakes and make you puke. Just my .02$

so, when ladies are vomiting and shaking after a night with PI, it's not from disgust?

I ride with some pukers! It always makes for some good laughs around the campfire later.
My experience is pretty much limited to hang over type events.
I would suggest cutting down the brew intake to under 2 pitchers each.
I think you generally feel a lot better after you have yakked, so why not.

between getting in better shape, getting better at grappling and tweaking my diet the puking has stopped. huzzah!
barring injury or illness, i'm entering my first tournament in December
20 days to drop 20 lbs.

Hey, good luck! And don't worry about the puking. Consider it a badge of honor: you can make yourself workout hard enough to puke! Not too many can claim that. Not a grappler, but I think it was probably never that you weren't in shape from riding -- it's just a different kind of conditioning. I would imagine that grappling involves lots of quick, powerful moves that also force you to stay flexed up for a potentially long time. That says nothing about your fitness on a bike since bike fitness is more often about steady, controlled efforts over a longer period of time without that same level of instant, all-or-nothing power. Any time you start pushing muscles really hard and do it at speed, your heart rate really jumps, and that's probably where the puking was coming from. As you tune your body to get used to that feeling more, your heart rate adapts and you can spike up and down without the associated nausea. You may also find that the power you gain from going back to that kind of a workout would translate nicely to a velodrome or a crit with lots of sprints since those are closer to that kind of power-based effort than a long steady mountainbike ride is. So if you're going to keep grappling and riding, you may want to think about doing some track at a velodrome. You may not realize it, but you are probably building yourself into a very strong track rider.
