I'm disappointed in my Singleator. I had to drop the single-speed specific chain I bought because it was too wide to fit through the Singleator's pulley guide. Then, after just three trail rides, I managed to bend the Singleator in by about 35 degrees, ripping the XT chain I was using in the process. All I was doing was riding over roots (no freaky jumps or anything like that).

It could be a freak accident, but the Singleator didn't seem to be providing enough tension, even though my LBS had tensioned it (stating that any more tension would break the spring) and the chain was quite tight (I'll have pictures available on the net soon).

Should I go with another Singleator or try something like Soulcraft's Convert? Has anyone used the Convert (does it feature an adjustment allowing the pulley to align under the rear cog)?

Thanks all.

That "SS Specific" chain you were using was probably 1/8" instead of the normal 3/32". Directions with the singleator specifically stated that you shouldn't use it with 1/8" chains. The deal about getting enough tension can be problematic given certain gear combinations and chainstay lengths. Ideally, the Singleator should be run in the pushing up mode so as to wrap more chain around the rear cog/freewheel. That cuts down on the chain trying to skip. If that can't be run that way, then I know lots of people who run the Singleator and don't have any problems with it.

Don't know for sure but it sounds like the LBS may have installed the Singleator wrong or you have a chainline problem.

I went the DIY route ... using an old derailleur to start off with and then a "custom made" tensioner. I kinda like that better than purchasing something off the rack. I've never used the Soulcraft so can't comment on it. Personally, I'd run a derailleur and just have fun with it but (thankfully) everybody is different.

Good luck and shout out if you have any more questions.

I've got a Rohloff from webcyclery (http://www.webcyclery.com).

It's worked great and even allows you to run 2 speed.

I've had a Paul's tensioner for about 5 years now and its held up fine. It's only a couple bucks more than a Surly. If you want to convert an old derailleur, look into the Bontrager site for info on the how-to. Get yer single on, son!:)
