I have a friend that is new to biking and is looking for a womens specific seat. She wants to know if this is really perhaps just a marketing scheme or if their is science behind the need for it. She has tried a couple of "regular seats" and they are very uncomfortable. I told her that not being female myself, and having no experience with female specific riding issues that I would not be able to offer much assistance other than confirm the existance of these saddles and that i myself have tried tons of saddles before finding "the one". I went to my favorite LBS and they were not much help either. I told her I thought perhaps their was another place I could check. So here I am soliciting advice. It would be much appreciated. Brands, models, prices etc. Then she can experiment within a context. Saddles are such a personal subjective issue!

Women have more widely spaced sit bones than men, and they generally need a wider saddle so they aren't putting weight in uncomfortable places. My sweetie complained about her saddle until I put a WTB Speed She on there. She loves it.

yeah, i road a jamis exile a few weeks back with the speed v on it, even though the seat felt very stiff and hard to my hand, the moment i got on it felt like i was floating. since i do have a bit of a...feminine figure, i may try the speed she just for kicks.

I use a Terry Dragonfly on my roadie. A month after I bought it I did my first century and had no complaints. I would get one for my mtb, but I don't want to wreck a $100 saddle. I love it though. I find a narrower saddle better than the wider ones. But Terry has a bunch of other saddles in a variety of shapes and $'s. Check 'em out.

Definitely go for a Women specific saddle. I have a juliana Ti race - and it is so comfortable. Friends of mine recommend the the WTB She and the Terry women's saddle also.
Men's saddles put the pressure in all the wrong places for us girlies causing chaffing and worse! Any WSD saddle will be better than the best man's one for her.
Cheers and Merry Christmas
