Rock 'N Roll, Blues Explosion Style. Yeah, I've seen the videos, love the one for She Said. You can get a free DVD of the videos from JSBX's record label (matadorrecords.com) - they are apparently giving it away w/ the album now, but when it first came out they weren't including it, so they are offering them up for people who bought the CD early. BTW, if you've never seen JSBX live, you have no idea what you are missing. Raw energy rock and roll!

And an addition to the list:
Dag Nasty - Wig out at Denko's (from Dischord, home of CDs shipped for $10 and some excellent bands)

I seem to have an addiction to Clutch.
Excellent. Local boys that lay it down heavy. One of my favorites. New live CD (http://www.pro-rock.com/googol.html) out before Christmas.

If you can find it, pick up Boss Hog's first Ep "Drinkin', Letchin', and Lyin" It's out of print, but they pop up on Ebay. Word is , there is going to be a CD re-issue once Christina gets to it. Pu**y Galore was really good in their own way (first real band Jon Spencer was in with his wife Christina) and so was the offshoot Action Swingers.

Finally got around to this. Couldn't find Now I Got Worry, so I went with Orange instead. A little to disjointed for my tastes. And when little Jon Spencer turned into Elvis I'll never know.

In the console:

new Queens Of The Stone Age
Halford - Crucible
Iron Maiden - Piece of Mind
Black Label Society - 1919 Eternal

I know what you mean about Static X, but there's something about them that I just can't get enough of. Mainly their first record, but the second one has some choice cuts too...

Hi Scott,
I only heard 2 songs, "Swamped" and "Heaven's a Lie". Both of them sounded the same, like they could have been one long song. I don't really like LC anyway. They have a goth sound, and I don't like the vocals. It sounds like a 70's folk-singer chick set to droning metal.

I miss the old WSOU. I remember in the mid 80s when they first came on the air, they played cheesy metal for an hour every day. Then in 1986 I think, they switched to metal all the time. It was hair bands in the day (Motley Crue, Whitesnake, Kix) and heavy stuff (Mercyful Fate, Slayer, Celtic Frost) at night.
I think it's kind of stupid how it took them 16 years to realize they weren't catering to their student body. And they're a catholic university to boot. Duh.
No one really listens to SOU now. What a shame.
Same thing happened to WRSU (Rutgers) a couple years ago. In the late 80's/early 90s it was almost all punk and hardcore. Now it's just crap.

Ryan Adams-Demolition is a constant, I will go to another cd listen to half of it and go back to Demolition I don't know why but it is just really good.

Other than Ryan Adams or Whiskeytown I listen to Starflyer 59, Wilco, Vigilantes of love/Bill Mallonee, Uncle Tupelo, Third Day, Damien Jurado, Pedro the Lion, and Stavesacre a lot.

Used to like punk, but can't stand it any more, never liked metal, and I have to be in just the right mood for Hip Hop but only if it is really really good Hip Hop.

Just found out about modest mouse last year and they are great, especially while driving to Moab. I mostly bump some really good Hip hop, some nice slayer or black sabbath, a heaping serving of 60's and 70's soul and funk and a lot of Jazz (like bee-bop yo, ya'know miles, monk, rollins, Bird, Herbie Hancock and stuff). I really do listen to all of this and I even like incubus and some of that kind of stuff. Just keep the country, the glam rap (Ludicrus, jay -z, etc..) , crap rock, and stupid phish away from me. Thanks and I love you all. (even you phish heads)

Top five rotation in my Audi as of 2/15/03:

The Roots - Phrenology
Talib Kwali- Quality

Black Sabbath- Box set

David Bazan is an awesome song writer, I have all of pedro's album's and I honestly cannot rate a single one higher than another, but they all rank as awesome.

It is people like David that help me stay away from being religious and be more of a true Christian, if that makes any sense to you? He is so honest, I am really tired of Christians that pretend life is completely hunky-dorey no problems, no temptations, and always walking on the straight and narrow, but David Bazaan is honest with how life is, not perfect, but trying to live right, and dusting yourself off and reconnecting with God when you don't.

i actually do understand what you mean by living as a true christian. im certainly NOT a christian but i can understand the influence that album would have on your perception of the worldview. personally i love the fact that although there are blatant christian references in his songs, they are veiled under odd couplings, such as sex and divorce. and a lot of his song content deals with political issues as well. effin great. im still not a fan of old PTL but that album kills.

I saw Black Francis in Little Rock this winter. I think it was in December. It was him just solo for awhile. He opened up with The Black Rider. Later the drummer and Dave the other guitarist (I think his name is Dave) jumped in. They played forever. Played alot of Black Letter Days and some older stuff and even some Pixie classics. Super good times.

Must be in a mood. Did one of my rare record store runs the other day and picked up two amazing female singer/songwriters.

1) If you like the alt.country girl singer, you're doing yourself a grave disservice if you don't have all of Neko Case's albums. That woman's voice is worth it's weight in Paul hubs and she's also the sexiest human being that ever lived (http://www.sympathyrecords.com/calendar/2000/february2000.html), if that matters. I saw her live with a band she's in the other day and almost fell over because of how great she was. Buy "Blacklisted" if you can only get one, but the more you buy the better off you'll be.

2) Similarly, Cat Power's 2003 record "You Are Free" is really good. She writes nice songs and sings them good. Big points.

3) Finally, because balance is important, you should buy the new Anthrax record, "We've Come for You All." It's great. If you like Anthrax you'll understand. If you don't currently like Anthrax, you'll be convinced. They'll be back in the US in August, and you shouldn't miss them live. Failing that, you need this album.

It seems odd to say that about a violin player, but if you don't believe me, listen to these things and see if you can tell me I'm wrong:

musically I'm all over the place. Current CD rotation is

Sharon Isbin , Baroque Favorites for Guitar

Chicago Symphony Orchestra - Tchaikovsky, Mendelssohn: First Piano Concertos.

Rob Zombie and Alice Cooper, various cuts my son burned for me.

Peter Sykes: Fantasy & fugue on BACH, Benedictus, etc.
This is really creepy pipe organ music I got as a gag gift. Call it early death metal.

George Clinton, 6 degrees of P-Funk

Being a child of the 70's I kind of have an affinity for the hard rock/metal of that time, but I pretty much like anything that rocks hard. I find that the older I get the more open I am to different kinds of music that in the past, I wouldn't even bother giving a listen to. Right now, my favorite band is Gov't Mule, I love these guys, they play a wide range of different types of music and cover tunes that they put the unmistakable "Mule" sound to. I am also really into Godsmack...they just rock!

For christmas my wife got me the "Song Catcher" Cd's, I saw the movie on HBO and freaked out my wife when she heard me sing nearly every song in the movie. Most of the songs in the movie are traditional southern applachian folk songs I learned from grandmother. pretty cool

One of my friends discovered he is 1/16000th indian and is now on a serious tribal trip back to his roots riding an ancient loop tail Yeti as his war pony. ( his divorce has made him strange ) He turned me on Drum Visions by Steve & David Gordon, and "Earth Spirit" by R. Carlos Nakai. Too bad I didn't hear this music when I was a mushroom eating hippy. Good music to zone out with.

The String Quartet Tribute to The White Stripes is the best of the series since the tribute to nine inch nails IMO, best cut on the CD is "seven nation army"

recent acquisition: Pieta Brown. Greg Brown's daughter, I'm told. A very competent country and blues singer in her own right. Accompanied by a really good guitar player.

Great songs. It's on the iTunes Music Store. Buy buy buy, then go see her live. She's pretty too.

Am I alone on this board in thinking that gadget is the absolute bomb? When it has stuff I want the experience of buying it is pretty much all I want from the Internet.

I listen to alot of stuff but find myself going back to Gear Daddies from time to time. If you're not familiar they're alt country in that unkle tupelo vein. Songs like "drank so much I Just Feel Stupid" and "Cryin neath the statue of Jesus" just make you feel not so alone. I partied with the band a few times, did some set up on Zellars guitar at one gig, and best of all saw a somewhat rare (free) reunion concert in St. Paul a few years back. I don't know where to get their CD's, sorry, cause they made some great music. if you haven't taken a listen to anchorhead, hairygrumps submission, I recommend them too. Horrorpops, Hell yeah, post modern punkabilly not as hardcore as the cramps, better than many...
Jet, Get born, it´s only me, or sometimes they sound a little like The Who, just in one or two songs.. I dunno...
Dave Brubeck, Take five, post war jazz at the top... very good

Slipknot 3.0 is my constant companion on the iPod lately. I've worked it into what I call the Subliminal Verses Workout, wherein I pick a direction, hammer for the length of the album, then turn around and try to get home before the album's over. 'sfun.

Who can I count on seeing at the Post Gazette Pavillion on the 5th of August?

If you are there, look for a green '97 F-150 Offroad Extended Cab surrounded by tattooed punk idiots and out-of-place hippie chicks. The keg will be in the back.

Tapping starts at 10am. We plan on staggering through the gate around noon. in 2002, I showed A New Found Glory my manhood (they deserved it). I hope to top my own feat this year.

I'm a confermed Jackmormon fan. www.jerryjoseph.com (5hr drive to PDX, 4hrs of music, 5hrs home, then work all day) But they aren't playing at the moment as Jerry is in a TEMPARY band called Stockholm Syndrome w/ Dave Schools, Eric McFadden, and some others. Good tunes, Check em out if they are close. They have seveal songs on the website. But I want the raw loud three piece thunder of the Jackmormons back......

I ride w/ one ear bud in. Years ago I rode with both and the volume cranked but then one day I looked behind to find 2 dirt bikes wanting to pass. Some times it feels sacreligious to be listening to tunes while riding in the woods, then at other moments it is so prefect.

Year of The Rat...

If anyone remembers Failure, its Ken Andrews' new band (also of Replicants fame), but beware without VanLewen (one of his partners in Failure, now in A Perfect Circle), Year of The Rat is a tad more pop sounding...think Foo Fighters. Gone is the deep brooding present in Failure's tracks such as "Solaris" and "The Nurse Who Loved Me" (no, A Perfect Circle DIDN'T write that one).

The Beat Farmers, Tales of the New West.

Sliding back into the 80's on the drive in. Made me wanna put on my boots, ride into San Luis and get in a bar fight at DK's.

Smokin hash w/ Country Dick Montana and having him throw his arm around me and share the mike for a rousin " Happy Boy" song. Some high lights of my life.

Dick is missed dearly. :(

24 Caprices, Opus 1 for Solo Violin, composed by Nicolo Paganini, performed by Itzhak Perlman.

Whoa! Perlman is the Lance Armstrong of violin. Check it out. Even if you hate classical, you might want to give it a listen. Rarely have I heard such a perfect balance of technical mastery and sheer passion in a musical performance.
