I am new to this place and I wanted opinions from any Clydesdales out there: which is better for an all around bike, the Giant Rainier, or the Jamis Dakar. My wallet can only afford six or seven hundred dollars. Any other suggestions are welcome - especially if the bike is cheaper than the six or seven hundred I am so willing to spend.

They seem like very different bikes, but I do have some experience with the Ranier. An old high school friend of mine (he was a football player and is still a big dude - 250 lbs +) bought a Ranier earlier this year and came down to visit. I was impressed. The bike is light, has a nice goupo and the frame looked nice. The ride was a little uncomfortable, but, I love steel mountain bikes and narrow seats. The Dakar, from what I remember, is a tried and true design that has moved down to the lower price range. It probably wouldn't be a bad buy if you want more comfort and are willing to upgrade as stuff breaks on you. I don't think either one of them will like big air or anything like that. Hope that helped a bit. Cheers. Oh, I hope to try some of that Roman chocolate one of these days.
