You need special tools for the cranks and BB.
Try here for instructions. They also make the tools you need.

Those tools are worth having though. Spending about a few bucks on tools will save you way more in a year or two. Since I bought your basic set of wrenches, crank-puller and other little stuff, I pretty much take my bike into the shop for parts, upgrades or advice.
Spend your money on the fun stuff, not maintenance.

I agree on the crank puller. Not so sure on the BB tool. With modern cartridge units, BBs are pretty much a throw-away item. When I need a new one I just pull the cranks, bring the bike to the shop, and have them replace the BB. Costs the price of the part and the odd six-pack here and there.
If I was overhauling my BB annually or better, it'd be a different story.

For most jobs the tool will pay for itself in it's first or second use. Start investing in tools, you'll be back in the saddle faster and save money in the long run.

I know how to fish, and while there are times when I'm willing to trade time for money and make a trip to the grocery store, there's a certain satisfaction in fishing for my own self that makes the whole fishing experience just that much better.
As it were.
